Reducing The Trash

Eve and Luca want to reduce the amount of trash that their school has every day after lunch.
Currently, the students are eating off lunch trays made from a Styrofoam material. Each day the
students’ garbage is divided into food waste and trash, including the styrofoam lunch trays. Eve
and Luca measure the amount of trash that is thrown away each day after lunch for one week.
They measured the trash in kilograms and recorded it on a table. After talking with their
teachers about the problem, they were given a budget of $3,000 to help come up with a
solution. Eve and Luca decided they wanted to provide a more environmentally friendly tray for
students to use. They wrote down a list of criteria that they wanted their new trays to have.

Criteria:

• Made of recyclable material

• Have at least three compartments for foods

• Must be washable

When researching solutions, Eve and Luca found two possible products that they could use.

Solution 1

• Made of plastic
• Cost of $2,900 for a one-time purchase
