Planned between 1983- 1984Mrts in chennai started at 1991 in Chennai,
Opened on 26 January 2004Construction started from December 21st
2002.Area size: 1350 sqm including park in the mrts

it is situated along the banks of the bukhingham canal.There is a slum

located near the train statiion .

the people of the slum used the ground / spaces adjoining the mrts as a
part of their daily activity.as that space was full of thorny bushes and
along with the stench of the canal, made the space repulsive.

This lead to the space to become a hub of shady and criminall activites.
 01 LOCATION: THE MRTS IS LOCATED ALONG THE BUKHINGHAM CANAL .IT HAS
SLUMS ON ONE SIDE AND OMR ON THE OTHER.IT USED TO BE A VERY
DANGEROUS NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH HIGH CRIME RATES.

DAY DRINKING : IT HAS BEEN NOTED THAT DAY DRINKING WAS PREVELENT IN
THE SITE.DAILY WAGE LABOURERS FREEQUENTLY CONSUMED ALCHOHOL IN
THE BANKS OF THE CANAL

03 DRUGS : DRUG PEDELLING AND CONSUMING USED TO BE

FREEQUENT.MOJORITY OF THEM WERE SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS

SPORTS:THE BOYS FROM THE NEIGHBOURHOOD USED TO REGULARLY PLAY
FOOTBALL AND CRICKET IN THE SITE.
 THE PARK
FTHE PARK IS A FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEIGHBOURHOOD AND LOCAL COMMUNITY. IT ENCOURAGES PHYSICAL ACTIVITES AND PAVES
AWAY OF LIVING HEALTHILY WITH NATURE .

THE UNUSED AND THE SHADY SPACES UNDER THE BRIDGE AND ALONG THE BUCKINGHAM CANAL WERE CLEARED AND PLANNED INTO
RECREATIONAL SPACES.

THE SPACES INCLUDE BADMINTON COURT, HAS SPACE FOR DANCE AND FITNESS WHICH ENCOURAGES THE YOUTH OF THE COMMUNITY.

pURIFIED DRINKING WATER, TOILETS ALSO INCLUDED FOR DISABLED PEOPLE . IT ENSURES IN CREATEING A SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD.
CONTEXT:IMPACT The development has resulted in the transformation of a crime
prone shady neighbourhood into a family friendly wellnes
park.

It is accessible to all age group and provides a feeling of

security and a barrier free envirionment.

the development of park has given rise to many local

vendors setting up stalls in and around the park.

This has resulted to become a constant go to spot for the

local residents of the nearby slums.

it has also encouraged people from other neighborhoods to

come and visit the place

the mural in the facade of the mrts sends a strong message

about the impact of HIV ,AIDS, and other sexually
transmitted diseases
COMMUNITY: IMPACT
this creates an atmosphere for the youth to follow a well disciplined
lifestyle

it creates a safe atmosphere for the children of the neighborhood to

play and excercise.

it acts as a barrier for the youth of the community from the dark side
of the crime filled enviroinment.

it acts as a social hub which helps the youth to interact and connect.

it provides them with a space which is secured and helps them

engage in extracurricular activites.
