OPTIMIZATION OF AGARWOOD OIL EXTRACTION BY USING DESIGN OF EXPERIMENT (DOE) METHOD ABSTRACT

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. Coriander is native to southern Europe and North Africa to southwestern Asia. It is a soft, hairless plant growing to 50 centimetres (20 in) tall. The leaves are variable in shape, broadly lobed at the base of the plant, and slender and feathery higher on the flowering stems. The flowers are borne in small umbels, white or very pale pink, asymmetrical, with the petals pointing away from the center of the umbel longer (5 6 mm) than those pointing towards it (only 13 mm long). The fruit is a globular dry schizocarp 35 mm diameter. In American culinary usage, the fruits ("seeds") are generally referred to as coriander, the leaves as cilantro.

Introduction Design of experiments (DOE) is a useful technique that used for exploring new processes, gaining increased knowledge of the exiting processes and optimizing these processes to achieve a better performance(Antony,J.1997). It was developed in the earlym1920s by Sir Ronald Fisher. It used in many industrial sectors such as in development and optimization of manufacturing processes. Typical examples are the production of wafers in the electronics industry, the manufacturing of engines in the car industry and the synthesis of compounds in the pharmaceutical industry. Another main type of DOE application is the optimization of analytical instruments. Design of Experiments (DOE) is widely used in research and development, where a large proportion of the resources go towards solving optimization problems (Antony, J.1997). Areas where DOE is used in industrial research, development and production: i. Optimization of manufacturing processes ii. Optimization of analytical instruments iii. Screening and identification of important iv. Factors Robustness testing of products

The key to minimizing optimization costs is to conduct as few experiments as possible. DOE requires only a small set of experiments and thus helps to reduce costs. The potential application of DOE in manufacturing processes includes i. Improved yield and stability ii. Improved profits and return on investment

iii. Improved process capability iv. Reduced manufacturing costs v. Reduce process design and development time

Objective To determine the factors which may affect the result of an experiment Extraction time,Extraction temperature,Desorption time.

Central composite design:

- -1 0 1 Extraction temperature 45C 48C 52C 58C 60C Extraction time 0.5min 6min 14 min 22 min 30 min Desorption time 13 sec 40 sec 80 sec 120 sec 151 sec

The advantages of DOE are : 1) Requires less resources such as time, money, material. 2) Estimate of the effects of each factor more precisely. 3) Factor interactions can be estimated.

The disadvantages of (ASE): Requires a lot of time for research Very expensive.
