(a) The diagram shows a parabola with focus S ( 2, −3) , directrix y = 1, and vertex V.

(i) Write down the coordinates of V. 1

(b) Consider the function f ( x ) = x3 − x 2 − 5 x + 1 .

(i) Find the coordinates of the stationary points of the curve y = f ( x ) and 3

(a) Find the coordinates of the vertex of the parabola −12 x = y 2 − 6 y + 3. 2

(b) The point P( x, y ) moves in the plane so that its distance from the point A (1, 4 ) is 3
twice its distance from the point B (1,1) .

Find the equation of the locus of P and describe it geometrically.

(c) The graph of the gradient function y = f ′ ( x ) is given below.
