CHALLENGES

Achieving sustainable development faces a myriad of challenges,

spanning economic, social, and environmental spheres. Some key
challenges include:

1.Resource Depletion: Meeting the needs of current and future

generations without exhausting natural resources requires careful
management. Overexploitation of resources such as water, forests,
and minerals threatens ecosystems and compromises sustainability.

2.Climate Change: Rising global temperatures, extreme weather

events, and sea-level rise pose significant threats to sustainable
development. Mitigating and adapting to climate change requires
international cooperation, technological innovation, and policy
interventions.

3.Poverty and Inequality: Poverty and inequality undermine

sustainable development by limiting access to basic needs such as
education, healthcare, and sanitation. Addressing poverty and
promoting inclusive growth are essential for sustainable
development.

4.Lack of Policy Implementation: Despite international agreements

and commitments to sustainable development, many governments
struggle to enforce environmental regulations effectively due to
political, economic, and institutional barriers.

5. Pollution: Air, water, and soil pollution from industrial activities,

transportation, agriculture, and waste disposal pose significant
health risks to humans and ecosystems, affecting biodiversity,
climate, and water quality.

Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts from

governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals, as well as
international cooperation and collaboration.
OPPORTUNITIES - Green Jobs

Sustainable development offers a vast array of opportunities across

various sectors, driven by the need to balance economic growth,
social inclusion, and environmental protection.

A sustainable green economy promotes prosperity through

environmentally friendly practices, renewable resources, circular
processes, social equity, and economic resilience, fostering long-term
well-being for people and the planet.

The specialised skills which are important for building or developing

Sustainable Green Economy are called Green Skills. People
possessing Green Skills are now being hired for jobs in the fields of
agriculture, manufacturing, research and development (R&D) and
service activities. These jobs are called ‘Green Jobs’.

Green jobs contribute to sustainable development by promoting

environmentally friendly practices, reducing carbon emissions,
conserving natural resources, and fostering social equity. They drive
innovation, create employment opportunities, and support the
transition to a low-carbon economy, ensuring economic growth while
minimizing environmental degradation and enhancing societal well-
being.
