participant is subjected to natural or unusual physical and mental challenges such as speed,
height, depth or natural forces and where fast and accurate cognitive perceptual processing
maybe required for a successful outcome.
Adventure sports are different from the traditional sports. They are undertaken at various
places depending on natural topography and weather conditions. According to Economic
Survey of India, adventure sports is upcoming business and it will provide lot of jobs and
professions; moreover, tourism industry has grown to new height due to these activities.
The basic concepts of adventure sports are:

 Protection of Wildlife
 Use of Natural Resources
 Understanding Nature
 Healthy Activity
 Information about Area
 Leadership and Togetherness
 Develop Physical Fitness
 Gives Thrill and Recreation
 Overcome Problems and Develop Creativity
 Organisational Skills
 Encourage Tourism
 Considering Safety Tools
 Knowledge about Forest Resources
Adventure Sports and their Safety Equipments
1. Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing is a sport in which participants climb up, down or across natural rock
formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or
the endpoint of a usually pre-defined route without falling. It is a physically and
mentally demanding sport, one that often tests a climber’s strength, endurance, agility
and balance along with mental control. Knowledge of proper climbing techniques and
the use of specialised climbing equipment is crucial for the safe completion of routes.
Safety means for rock climbing:
Climbing Ropes
Harness
Climbing Helmet
Belay Device
Carabiners
Quickdraws

2. Mountaineering

Mountaineering is a set of activities that involves ascending mountains.

Mountaineering-related activities include traditional outdoor climbing, skiing, and
traversing via ferratas. Unlike most sports, mountaineering lacks widely-applied
formal rules, regulations, and governance; mountaineers adhere to a large variety of
techniques and philosophies when climbing mountains. A federation of alpine clubs,
the UIAA, is the International Olympic Committee -recognized world organization
for mountaineering and climbing.
Safety means for mountaineering:
Mountaineering Boots
Crampons
Climbing Helmets
Ice Axes
Mountaineering Ropes
Climbing Harnesses
Crevasse Rescue Equipment
Carabiners
Backpacks for Mountaineering

3. Trekking

Trekking is a long adventurous journey undertaken on foot in areas where common

means of transport are generally not available. Trekker should use natural resources
and consider safety principles. The trekker should enjoy the nature and shoot
(photography of) the scenic beauty. The trekker should not spoil or disturb the nature
whereas fauna and flora should be appreciated.

Safety means for trekking:

Tent
Sleeping bag
Water bottle
Mug
Pan
Rope
Safety Kit
First Aid Kit
Trekking Map of Area
Knife
Binocular
Backpack or Rucksack
4. Camping

Camping is an outdoor recreational activity. It involves overnight stays away from

home in a shelter, such as a tent or a recreational vehicle. Typically participants or
campers leave developed areas to spend time outdoors in more natural ones in pursuit
of activities providing them enjoyment. Camping is a part of many youth
organisations around the world such as Scouting, NCC, etc. It is used to teach self-
reliance and teamwork. Camping is often enjoyed in conjunction with many other
activities such as Canoeing, Climbing, Trekking, Hiking, Fishing, etc. Campsite
selected should be near water reservoir such as river, stream, lake, etc., and it should
be safe site; moreover, away from dangerous or wild animals. The camper should
have sufficient knowledge to dig pit, construct camp and the safety wall around the
tent.
Safety means for camping:
Waterproof Tent
Rope
Torch
Axe
Knife
Cutter
Sleeping Bag
Water Bottle
Mug
Pan
Binocular
First Aid Kit
Backpack or Rucksack
5. River Rafting

River Rafting also known as White Water Rafting, is a recreational outdoor activity
which uses an inflatable raft to navigate a river or the other body of water. This is
often done on the White Water or different degrees of rough water. Dealing with risk
and the need for teamwork is often a part of the experience. Raft used for river rafting
is a lightweight multilayer rubberised boat filled with air; its chambers enabling it to
float on water. This is usually done over fast flowing river or stream in order to
provide thrill and excitement to rafter. The development of this activity as a leisure
sports has become popular in Himalayan rivers. This activity is dangerous if safety
measures are not considered.
Safety means for river rafting:
Safe raft
Swim suit
Life jacket
Raft push
Knowledge about river flow and its curve
Safe destination point

6. Surfing

Surfing is a water sports in which the wave rider referred as ‘surfer’ rides on moving
wave, balancing on the surfing board, the wave usually carrying the surfer near the
shore. The waves suitable for surfing are primarily found in oceans, sea, lake or in
rivers in the form of standing wave or tidal bore.
Safety means for Surfing:
Good Surfing Board
Swim suit
Life jacket

7. Paragliding

Paragliding is a recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders:

lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure.
The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing consisting of a large number
of interconnected and baffled cells. Wings shape is maintained by its suspension lines.
By skilful exploitation of sources of lift, the pilot may gain height, often climbing to
altitude of few thousand metres. The paraglider should follow the instruction of single
lifeguard or should be accompanied by expert. He should consider safety measures
during this activity.
Safety means for paragliding:
Safe Wings
Ropes
Harness
Helmet
Sunglasses
8. Parasailing

Parasailing also known as parascending or parakiting is an activity in which the

person is suspended mid-air, attached to a parachute, and pulled by a boat. The result
is that the person floats with the wind, above the deep blue sea. Parasailing gives an
aerial view of the surroundings, lending an entirely new perspective on how one
views the place. The adrenaline rush surely excites the person to transform into an
adventure junkie.
Some safety means for parasailing:
Safe Parachute
Safe and Strong Anchor
Tow Rope

9. Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a sport of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain,
usually using specially designed mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities
with other bikes but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and
performance in rough terrain, such as air or coil-sprung shocks used as suspension,
larger and wider wheels and tyres, stronger frame materials, and mechanically or
hydraulically actuated disc brakes. Mountain biking can generally be broken down
into five distinct categories: cross country, trail riding, all mountain (also referred to
as "Enduro"), downhill, and freeride.
Safety means for mountain biking:
Well-equipped mountain bike
Glasses
Shoes
Hydration Systems
GPS Systems
Air pump
CO2 inflator with cartridge
Bike tools
High-power lights
10. Hang Gliding

Hang gliding is an air sport or recreational activity in which a pilot flies a light, non-
motorised foot-launched heavier-than-air aircraft called a hang glider. Most modern
hang gliders are made of an aluminium alloy or composite frame covered with
synthetic sailcloth to form a wing. Typically, the pilot is in a harness suspended from
the airframe, and controls the aircraft by shifting body weight in opposition to a
control frame.
Safety means for Hang Gliding:
Harness
Rope
Parachute
Knives
Light ropes
Radios
First-aid equipment
