8. The following information may be useful.
a) Acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8m / s 2

1. a) i) State two importance of Reynolds number. (02 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)


ii) Write down three forms of Bernoulli’s equation. (02 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)

b) A cylindrical tank of 10cm in radius rests on platform 5m high. Initially, the


tank was filled with water to a height (h) of 5m. If the plug of area 10−4 𝑚2 is
removed by an orifice on the side of the tank at the bottom,

i. Calculate the initial speed with which water flows from the orifice.

2. a) Define the following terms as used in waves

b) A stretched string is observed to vibrate with a frequency of 40 cycles per


second in its fundamental mode, when the supports are 0.6m apart. The
amplitude of the note is 0.3m. If the string has a mass of 3 × 10−2 𝑘𝑔,
calculate;
i. The velocity of propagation of the transverse wave in string.

c) Show how the following factors affecting the velocity of sound waves in air.

d) Calculate the radius of curvature of plane convex lens used to produce


Newton’s rings with a flat glass plate. If the diameter of the 10th dark ring is
4.48cm viewed by normally reflected light of wavelength 5 × 10−3 𝑚, what
is the diameter of the 20th bright ring?

3. a) i) State Hooke’s law of elasticity. (02 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)


ii) A uniform steel wire of length 4m and area of cross section 3 × 10−6 𝑚2 is
extended 1mm. Calculate the energy stored in the wire, if the elastic limit is
not exceeded.

b) A rubber cord of a catapult has a cross-sectional area of 2𝑚𝑚2 and an initial
length of 0.2m is stretched to 0.24m to fire a small object of mass 10g.
Assuming that the elastic limit is not exceeded, calculate the initial velocity
of the object when it is released.

c) i) Mention three evidences that proves that there is surface tension in water
surfaces.

ii) Calculate the work done against surface tension forces in blowing a soap

d) Estimate the radius of a single droplet when the rain drop of radius 0.5 mm
strikes the surface and breaks to 125 droplets of equal size. (04 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)

4. a) i) What is time constant of a capacitor? (02 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)


ii) Find the force of attraction between plates of a parallel plate capacitor of
effective area 2.5 × 10−4 𝑚2 when stores a charge of 3𝜇𝐶. (04 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)

b) i) What is dielectric material? (02 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)


ii) A parallel air plate capacitor is charged to a p.d of 300V and then
connected in parallel with another capacitor of equal dimension but with
ebonite as a dielectric. The p.d is found to be 75V, calculate the dielectric
constant of the ebonite. (04 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)

c) The belt of a Vann De Graff generator is of width 10−2 𝑚 and travels at a


speed of 12𝑚/𝑠𝑒𝑐. The charge delivery on the belt is 3 × 10−5 𝐶𝑚−1 . The
generator is connected to a resistor of4 × 1010 Ω. Determine;
i. The maximum steady current that can be drawn from the generator.

b) Two identical wires R and S lie parallel in a horizontal plane, the axis being
0.1m apart. A current of 10A flows in R and in the opposite direction to a
current of 30A flows in S. Neglecting the effect of the earth’s magnetic flux
density, calculate the magnitude of B at a point P in the plane of the wire, if P
is;
i. Midway between R and S. (03 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)
ii. 0.05m from R and 0.15m from S. (03 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)

c) i) What is self inductance of a solenoid? (01 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘)


ii) Derive the expression for the energy stored in an inductor. (03 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠)

d) The self inductance of a coil of 500 turns is 0.25H. If 60% of the flux is
linked with a second coil of 10,000 turns, calculate the mutual inductance
between the two coils.

6. a) What are the main two differences between Rutherford’s and Bohr’s model
of an atom.

b) Hydrogen atom in its ground state is excited by means of monochromatic


radiation of wavelength 975Å. How many different lines are possible in the
resulting spectrum? Calculate the longest wavelength amongst them,
assuming the ionization energy of hydrogen atom is 13.6eV.

c) What is the power output of a 92 𝑈 235 reactor if it takes 30days to fuse up


2kg of fuel and if each fission gives 185MeV of usable energy? 𝑁𝐴 =
