HW#1 Solution

PROBLEM 1.22

The axial load P = 240 kips, supported by a W10  45 column,

is distributed to a concrete foundation by a square base plate as
shown. Determine the size of the base plate for which the
average bearing stress on the concrete is 750 psi.

SOLUTION

P
 = or
A
P
A=

240  103 lb
=
750 psi
= 320 in 2

Since the plate is square,

A = b2
b= 320 in 2

b = 17.89 in. 
PROBLEM 1.24

A 6-mm-diameter pin is used at connection C of the pedal

shown. Knowing that P = 500 N, determine (a) the average
shearing stress in the pin, (b) the nominal bearing stress in
the pedal at C, (c) the nominal bearing stress in each
support bracket at C.

SOLUTION
Since BCD is a 3-force member, the reaction at C is directed toward E, the intersection of the lines of act of the
other two forces.

From geometry, CE = 3002 + 1252 = 325 mm

From the free body diagram of BCD,

PROBLEM 1.31

The 1.4-kip load P is supported by two wooden members of uniform cross

section that are joined by the simple glued scarf splice shown. Determine
the normal and shearing stresses in the glued splice.

SOLUTION

P = 1400 lb  = 90 − 60 = 30

A0 = (5.0)(3.0) = 15 in 2
P cos 2  (1400)(cos30)2

PROBLEM 1.41

In the truss shown, members AC and AD consist of rods made of

the same metal alloy. Knowing that AC is of 25-mm diameter
and that the ultimate load for that rod is 345 kN, determine (a)
the factor of safety for AC, (b) the required diameter of AD if it is
desired that both rods have the same factor of safety.

SOLUTION

Forces in AC and AD.

Joint C: 1.5
Fy = 0: FAC − 48 kN = 0
11.25
FAC = 107.331 kN T

Joint D: 1.5
Fy = 0: FAD − 48 kN = 0

FAD = 197.909 kN T

PU 345 kN

FAC 107.331 kN

(b) For the same factor of safety in AC and AD,  AD =  AC .

PROBLEM 1.43

Two wooden members are joined by plywood splice plates that are fully
glued on the contact surfaces. Knowing that the clearance between the ends
of the members is 6 mm and that the ultimate shearing stress in the glued
joint is 2.5 MPa, determine the length L for which the factor of safety is 2.75
for the loading shown.

SOLUTION
2.5 MPa
 all = = 0.90909 MPa
2.75
On one face of the upper contact surface,
L − 0.006 m
A= (0.125 m)

Since there are 2 contact surfaces,
P
 all =
2A
16  103
0.90909  106 =

L = 0.14680 m 146.8 mm 
PROBLEM 1.47

A load P is supported as shown by a steel pin that has been inserted

in a short wooden member hanging from the ceiling. The ultimate
strength of the wood used is 60 MPa in tension and 7.5 MPa in
shear, while the ultimate strength of the steel is 145 MPa in shear.
Knowing that b = 40 mm, c = 55 mm, and d = 12 mm, determine
the load P if an overall factor of safety of 3.2 is desired.

SOLUTION
Based on double shear in pin,

PU = 2 AU = 2 d 2U
4

= (2)(0.012)2 (145  106 ) = 32.80  103 N
4
Based on tension in wood,
PU = AU = w (b − d )U
= (0.040)(0.040 − 0.012)(60  106 )
= 67.2  103 N
Based on double shear in the wood,
PU = 2 AU = 2wcU = (2)(0.040)(0.055)(7.5  106 )
= 33.0  103 N
Use smallest PU = 32.8  103 N
PU 32.8  103
Allowable: P= = = 10.25  103 N 10.25 kN 
F.S. 3.2
