4 Intermediate

Emily and Grandpa Gus have traveled to Brazil, the land of soccer and long, sandy
beaches!
Your tutor will read each sentence in the story. Repeat after them and ask questions if
you're unsure about anything. Make sure that you understand the Key Words!

Exercise 1
Copacabana Beach

They start their adventure by taking a walk along the famous Copacabana beach.

This is Copacabana, Emily. Isn't it just lovely?

Gus

It's so nice here! And the beach is sooooo long!

Emily
It sure is. People love coming here to swim, relax, or play sports, like
soccer and volleyball. Many events also take place on the beach!
Gus

Oh, really? What kind of events?

Emily

For example, there's a big party on New Year's Eve. Millions of people
come here, all wearing white. And there's music, dancing and fireworks!
Gus

Sounds fun! I'd love to see it someday!

Gus

So this is what being a bird must be like! Where are we going, Grandpa?

Emily

We're heading to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain for some more amazing
views!
Gus

Sugarloaf Mountain? That sounds like something you could eat!

Emily

It kind of does! And if we're lucky, we may even see some rock climbers
making their way to the top!

Emily

Yeah, that's Christ the Redeemer. It's 30 meters tall. That's like two
school buses stacked on top of each other!
Gus

And why is he holding his arms out like that?

Emily

He's there to welcome everyone to Rio and keep people safe. It's like
he's giving a big hug to the whole city!
Gus

I wish I could give him a hug back!

Emily
Well... you'd need a really tall ladder for that hug, Emily!

Gus

big stars like Pelé and Neymar have also played here!
Gus

So people in Brazil really love soccer, huh?
