Student
(Group 1)
OBJECTIVE:
● To lay-out a simple curve using offset from the tangent length, through the use of 3-4-5
triangles.

INSTRUMENT:
● Engineer’s Transit (1 pc.)
● Flaglets (12 pcs.)
● Range Poles (2 pcs.)
● Tape Measure (2 pcs.)
● Tripod (1 pc.)
● Wooden Pegs (2 pcs.)

PROCEDURE:
Solving:
1. Assign values for the curve length, L = 18.14 m and Intersection Angle I = 60°00’00”.
2. Solve for the values of Tangent Distance T = 10 m, and Y - Distance, Y = 2.5 m.
3. Solve the 3-4-5 triangle components for each point.
4. Set the Y - distances as the 4-component of the triangle.
𝑌2
5. Solve for the 3 - component as the X-offsets of the triangle using X = ( )
2𝑅

Field:
1. Establish Sta. PI, measuring the forward tangent T = 10 m, and establishing Sta. PC.
2. Locate the Points from the computed data at the forward tangent, for this case, use Y =
2.5 m as the interval.
3. At Sta. PI, sight Sta. PC, flip the vernier 180°00’00” vertically, and measure the intersection
angle I = 60°00’00”, measuring the backward tangent T to establish Sta. PT.
4. Locate the points using the Y interval.
Use the solved 3-component, also set as the x-offset, of each 3-4-5 triangle as the perpendicular
x-offset from the Y-distances and locate Points 1-12 to form the curve.

COMPUTATIONS:
*Data used were from previous laboratory data.

Given
T = 10 m
I = 60°00’00”
R = 10 / tan (60/2)
R = 17.32 m.

Curve Data (Other Data)

R = 10 / tan (60/2)
R = 17.32 m.

T = R tan (I/2)
T = 17.32 tan (60/2)
T = 10

Solving for Y-distances Y3 = 7.5 m.

Y = T/4
Y = 10/4 Solving for offset of the Tangent
Y = 2.5 m. 𝑌2
X = (2𝑅)
X1 = ((2.5)^2/2(17.32))
Y1 = y
X1 = 0.1804 m.
Y1 = 2.5 m.

X2 = ((5)^2/2(17.32))
Y2 = 2y
X2 = 0.7217 m.
Y2 = 2 (2.5 m.)
Y2 = 5 m.
X3 = ((7.5)^2/2(17.32))
X3 = 1.624 m.
Y3 = 3y
Y3 = 3 (2.5 m.)
Solving for Stations
Sta. 1 = Sta. PC + L1
Note: Use Pythagorean theorem to solve Sta. 1 = (10+000) + (2+507)
for the hypotenuse, which later to be used Sta. 1 = 12+507
in finding the stations.
Sta. 2 = Sta. PC + L2
L1 = √(𝑥1)2 + (𝑦1)2 Sta. 2 = (10+000) + (5+052)
Sta. 2 = 15+052
L1 = √(0.1804)2 + (2.5)2
L1 = 2.507 m.
Sta. 3 = Sta. PC + L3
Sta. 3 = (10+000) + (7+674)
L2 = √(𝑥2)2 + (𝑦2)2 Sta. 3 = 17+674
L2 = √(0.7217)2 + (5)2
L2 = 5.052 m. Sta. 4 = Sta. PT - L3
Sta. 4 = (27+320) - (7+674)
L3 = √(𝑥3)2 + (𝑦3)2 Sta. 4 = 19+646
L3 = √(1.624)2 + (7.5)2
Sta. 5 = Sta. PT - L2
L3 = 7.674 m.
Sta. 5 = (27+320) - (5+052)
Sta. 5 = 22+268
Sta. PC = 10+000

Sta. 6 = Sta. PT - L1
Sta. PT = Sta. PC + L
Sta.6 = (27+320) - (2+507)
Sta. PT = (10+000) + (17+320)
Sta. 6 = 24+813
Sta. PT = 27+320
CONCLUSION:

In this assignment, creating a simple curve by adding offsets from the tangent lengths
necessitates precision in measurements. It is critical to collect all of the necessary data for
computation in order to visualize the curve. This lab work was enjoyable, and we were able to
effectively write down a basic curve utilizing offset from the tangent.
