Round 1A
Name one method that can be used in the formation of alkenes in the laboratory.
Answer:
Round 1B
1. What mass of Na2CO3 must be weighed to prepare a 2.00 dm3 of 0.0500 moldm-3
solution? You are given atomic mass (g/mol) of Na as 23.0; C as 12.0; and O as 16.0.
Ans: 10.6 g
Moles of Na2CO3 required = 0.0500 × 2.00 dm3 = 0.100 mole
Mass of Na2CO3 required = 0.100 × 106 = 10.6 g
2. A student is given 15.0 cm3 of 6.0 moldm-3 HCl solution. What volume of water must be
added to obtain a desired concentration of 0.500 moldm-3 solution?
For 0.50 moldm-3, new volume will be (15 × 6)/0.5 = 180 cm3
Hence volume of water to be added = 180 – 15 = 165 cm3
3. In a titration, NaOH was found to completely neutralise 90 cm3 of 0.50 moldm-3 of HNO3.
Given that the total volume of solution at point of neutralisation is 140 cm3, calculate the
concentration of NaOH used in the titration.
Ans: 0.90 moldm-3
Volume of NaOH = 140 – 90 = 50 cm3
Concentration of NaOH = (90 × 0.50) / 50 = 0.90 moldm-3

Round 2
1. An alloy comprising four elements is made of 18 % of iron, 22 % of chromium, 48 % of
manganese and a percentage of tin. Given 200 g of alloy, how many grams of tin is
present?
Ans: 24 g
% of X = 100 ─ (18 + 22 + 48) %
100 ─ 88 = 12%
12
×20 0=24 g
100
2. How many moles of H+ ions are needed to convert NO3– to NO in a reduction half
reaction?
Ans: 4 moles
3. What is the main type of chemical reaction that takes place during the bleaching of
clothes?
Ans: Oxidation (or redox) reaction
