Contest 30

Round 1A
Indicate the main information obtained from the following quantum numbers:

1. Principal quantum number, n

Ans: Defines the main energy level of an orbital

2. Azimuthal quantum number or Angular momentum quantum number, l

Ans: Defines the shape (and type of orbital) occupied by an electron

3. Magnetic quantum number, ml

Ans: Defines the spatial orientation of a suborbital

Round 1B
1. An unknown compound contains 16 g of copper, 8.0 g of sulphur, and 16 g of oxygen.
What is the empirical formula of the compound? Atomic mass (g/mol) of Cu = 64; S = 32
O = 16

Ans: CuSO4

Mole of copper = 16/64 = 0.25

Mole of sulphur = 8/32 = 0.25
Mole of oxygen = 16/16 = 1
Mole ratio = 1: 1: 4; Hence empirical formula is CuSO4
2. During a laboratory experiment, 5.12 g of Copper was found to react with 2.56 g of
sulphur. Determine the empirical formula of the compound formed. Atomic mass (g/mol)
of Cu = 64; S = 32
Ans: CuS
Moles of Cu = 5.12/64 = 0.080
Moles of S = 2.56/32 = 0.080
Hence mole ratio of Cu:S is 1:1

3. An organic compound was found to contain 6.0 g of carbon, 1.50 g of hydrogen, and 4.0
g of oxygen. Determine the empirical formula of the compound.
Atomic mass (g/mol) of C = 12.0; O = 16.0; H = 1.0

Ans: CH3O
Moles of C = 6.0/12 = 0.50
Moles of H = 1.50/1 = 1.50
Moles of O = 8.0/16 = 0.50
Hence mole ratio of C:H:O = 1:3:1

Round 2
1. The equilibrium constant of the reaction: 2A ⇌ B + C is 5.0
The equilibrium constant of the reaction: B + D + C ⇌ 2E is 0.78
Find the equilibrium constant of the reaction: 2A + D ⇌ 2E
Ans: 3.9
New K = K1 × K2 = 5.0 × 0.78 = 3.9

2. The pH of a 500 cm3 solution of NaOH is 12.0. What will be the concentration of NaOH
if the volume of solution is increased to 1000 cm3 by addition of deionised water?
Ans: 5.0 × 10-3 moldm-3
[OH-] = [NaOH] = 0.010 moldm-3
Using C1V1 = C2V2,
New concentration = 0.010 × 500 / 1000 = 5.0 × 10-3 moldm-3

3. You are given the following thermochemical data:

The enthalpy of combustion of carbon to produce carbon (iv) oxide is -395.0 kJ/mol.
The enthalpy of combustion of carbon (ii) oxide to produce carbon (iv) oxide is -285.0 kJ/mol.
Calculate the enthalpy of formation of carbon (ii) oxide.
Ans: -110.0 kJ/mol
C + O2 → CO2 = -395.0
CO + ½O2 → CO2 = -285.0
Hence: C + ½O2 → CO = -395 + 285 = -110 KJ/mol
