I. Title: Purple Stew


II. Grade Level: 1 and 2
III. Standards

1.2 The student will demonstrate various uses of the voice, including
1. singing high and low pitches;
2. using the voice in speech and song; and
3. demonstrating expressive qualities of music, including changes in dynamics and tempo.

1.3 The student will sing a variety of songs alone and with others, including
1. matching pitches, using the head voice

2.2 The student will sing a repertoire of songs alone and with others, including
1. singing melodic patterns that move upward, downward, and stay the same;
2. singing melodies within the range of a sixth; and
3. increasing pitch accuracy while singing phrases and simple songs.

IV. Objectives:
As a result of the instruction, students will be able to:

1. Sing the melody with correct pitches with 85% accuracy


2. Reproduce the song’s rhythms with 85% accuracy
3. Transition from singing in head voice to speaking with 90% accuracy

Computer, slide presentation

VI. Prerequisites
Students must be able to:
1. Match pitch
2. Keep a steady beat

VII. Procedures:
Steps in Teaching:

 Demonstrating the song (1 min)


- Keep a steady beat by clapping or tapping
- Sing the song in its entirety while students listen

 Teaching the song (6-7 min)


- Break the song into smaller chunks
- Have the students repeat chunks after demonstrating them (my turn, your turn) and
have the students clap or tap while they sing
- Once they get the smaller chunks, merge them (halves)
- Repeat the echo process with the larger chunks
- Put the whole song together, sing it once with them and have them sing it by
themselves
- The students perform it once more, but this time have them point their finger on the
word “you”

 If time allows
- Pick a student to be the leader
- Tell the other students to make a stirring motion with their hands while they sing the
song
- Have the leader come up to the front of the class and sing the song there, and on the
word “you,” they point to one of their classmates and that student is the new leader

Overall Outcomes: Assessment for Each Outcome:

1. Sing the melody with correct pitches For each outcome, I will actively watch and
with 85% accuracy listen to the students as they are performing to
