LEGENDA
In The 189 Partimenti of Nicola Sala the figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and x (10) are generally used
over the stave, following common Neapolitan usage. In those instances where figures are
placed under the stave in the Principle Source, The 189 Partimenti of Nicola Sala retains the
original notation.
1
There has been some confusion about the order of the three volumes of Nicola Sala’s Regole del contrappunto
pratico. Since the volumes of Sala’s Regole are not numbered, libraries have ordered the volumes 2 and 3
differently. I here follow the order of the copy which is preserved at Statens Musiksamlingar in Stockholm.
PRELIMINARY REMARKS
The 189 Partimenti of Nicola Sala is primarily edited from autographs by Nicola Sala and from a
few other eighteenth-century manuscripts that can be linked to the conservatory where Sala
worked, La Pietà. The autographs considered here are F-Pn 4o c2 344 (dated 1776), I-Nc 46-1-
34 (without date), and I-Nc S-1-94 (without date). The three other sources that will be
considered here are the 1763 compilation manuscript I-LEcon Ms. BC4, the 1788 manuscript
copy that may be assumed to have been written by Sala’s french student Louis Julien Castels
de Labarre (1771–?), and the gathering fols. 101r–105r of the partimento collection I-MC 6-
F-15/2.2
The Critical Commentary is divided into four sections (A–D), according to the following
principles:
A) The 107 partimenti in more than one autograph source: the 13 partimenti in three
autograph sources (the partimenti Nos. 25–34 and 74–76 appearing in F-Pn 4o c2 344, I-
Nc 46-1-34, and I-Nc S-1-94) and the 94 partimenti appearing in two autographs (the
partimenti Nos. 35–73 and 77–131 appearing in F-Pn 4o c2 344 and I-Nc 46-1-34).
B) The 35 partimenti in one autograph source: the 3 unica in I-Nc S-1-94 (Nos. 140–
142) and the 32 unica in F-Pn 4o c2 344 (Nos. 1–24 and 132–139).
C) The 18 partimenti in one autograph source and in one non-autograph source: 18
partimenti in the autograph I-Nc S-1-94 and in F-Pn 4o c2 343 (18 partimenti: Nos.
143–160).
D) The 29 unica in one of the three non-autograph sources F-Pn 4o c2 343 (17 partimenti:
Nos. 161–176 and 178), B-Bc 8531 (1 partimento: No. 177), I-LEcon Ms. BC4 (9
partimenti: Nos. 179–187), 3 and I-MC 6-F-15/2 (2 partimenti: Nos. 188 and 189).
The 189 Partimenti of Nicola Sala presents the partimento output of a Neapolitan maestro in a
critical edition for the first time. No other Neapolitan maestro has been preserved in three
different autograph sources, and the authority of the figurings in this edition is, for that reason,
very high. The Critical Commentary starts with a large section of 107 partimenti that appear in
at least two autograph sources: F-Pn 4o c2 344 and I-Nc 46-1-34. "For this entire section the
autograph preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (F-Pn 4o c2 344, dated 1776) is
chosen as the primary source for the transcription, while the undated Neapolitan autograph (I-
Nc 46-1-34) is used as a secondary source.
