This is simple transposition, so il help you.

Trumpet is normally keyed in Bb which means you

would play a C, but it reality that is a Bb, and you
could play a D, but in reality it is in C, sounds a
little confus, but here is the transposition on the
Bb scale ( from Bb to Bb, or C to C)

Trumpet = Concert/Piano Pitch

C = Bb

D=C

E=D

F = Eb

G=F

A=G

B=A

C = Bb

Hopes that helps?

Nobody really mentioned this: It depends.

A b-flat trumpet is one night lower so you have to

play one note higher, and that’s the assumption
everyone seems to have made you meant, but
trumpets come in many different keys. A C
trumpet plays exactly like the piano, an E-flat
trumpet is a minor third higher, an F trumpet is a
fourth higher, etc.

The trumpet is pitched in B flat and the piano is in
C. That means that when you play a C in the
piano, it sounds as a C, but when you play a C on
the trumpet, it sounds a B flat. So if you want to
play the two instruments together, you have to
transpose the notes one whole step higher for the
trumpet ( i.e. C=D, D=E, E= F#, F = G and so on) .

Since the piano and trumpet are different in

notes, what note do I play on the trumpet for a Bb
on piano and so on?

The standard trumpet is a Bb instrument

(although A, C, D, E♭, E, low F, and G trumpets are
also available).

Assuming, however, that you are referring to a Bb

trumpet, it is pitched one tone lower than a piano:
so C on the trumpet corresponds to Bb on a
piano, D on a trumpet corresponds to C, E
corresponds to D, F corresponds to Eb, and so
on.

This is always assuming that the piano is tuned to

concert pitch and is in tune .

If you have a Bb trumpet, that means that when
you play a C on it, it will sound like a Bb on the
piano. In otherwords, the trumpet is one whole
step lower (C-B-Bb.) The notes on a piano are at
concert pitch, whereas Bb trumpet is a
transposing instrument. Please remember,
though, that many trumpets are also in C, which
means they don’t need to be transposed. A Bb on
one of those trumpets will sound at the same
pitch as a Bb on the piano.

Why is C on a trumpet a B-flat on a

piano? Why don’t we just call everything
the same? — Related

René Villarreal
Pianist & Composer · 6y

Because a B-flat trumpet is a transposing

instrument. (There are trumpets in C)

A transposing instrument is such that the written

pitches are different from the sounding pitches.

There are Horns in F, Clarinets in A, Flugelhorns in

Bb, Saxophones in Eb, and many others.

Why do we use such a stupid system? You may

ask…

Well, because it's actually not at all stupid.

When an good instrument maker is working on a

new design, the most important part is its sound.
A good quality sound —a beautiful timbre, you
may say— comes absolute first, everything else is
secondary.

There is no actual limit to the range possible on

brass instruments.

From personal experience the average range for a

decent student is around a C on the second
ledger line above the staff.

It is possible to play much higher though.

In my own high school we have at least 4 people

who can at times reach a G above the C during
football games, and I can occasionally reach a C
above that G.

Professionals have been known to play even

higher than that while maintaining a consistent
and clear tone.

It's just a matter if practice.

Some players have the ability to play very high but

most ordinary trumpet players I know get into
trouble past the high C above the staff. That’s
why all our music school trumpet music repertoire
doesn’t get higher than that and even that note is
more used for effect notes etc. because it’s
already hard. This counts for classical music and
of course skilled classical players can play higher
but most get stuck on a high G above the staff if
they want to have still some body on the note.
Players in light music, jazz often found the way to
play higher but since thatReading

A lot depends on what you mean by “learn”. If you

mean being able to play a few songs to entertain
your relatives and close friend, the definitely
piano. It can take a while to develop a useable
tone on a trumpet. In the first months you will
sound like a large animal with digestive issues. If
you mean at a higher level, good enough for
community bands or higher than all instruments
are about the same. Each has difficulties to

Piano is definitely easier to begin on; it’s much
easier to get to the point where you can play a
little melody on the piano than it is on the
trumpet. But I’ve found the deeper you get into
any instrument, the sillier it becomes to talk about
some instruments being harder than others; each
instrument presents its own unique challenges,
and every instrument is hugely difficult to master.
(Consider this: jazz guitarist John Scofield—a
highly respected player—once said in an interview
that he realized after a decade or so of playing
that he was never going to “master” the guitar.)
