A. Static of Particle (Force and Equilibrium)

1. A stake is being pulled out of the ground by means of two ropes as shown. Knowing that
α= 30˚, (a) determine the magnitude of the force P so that the resultant force exerted on
the stake is vertical, (b) the corresponding magnitude of the resultant.

2. For the stake (1). Knowing that the tension in one rope is 120 N, determine the
magnitude and direction of the force P so that the resultant is a vertical force of 160N.

3. Two forces are applied as shown to a hook support. Knowing that the magnitude of P is
35 N, determine (a) the required angle α if the resultant R of the two forces applied to
the support is to be horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.

4. Determine the x and y components of each of the forces shown. And determine the
resultant and direction.

5. Four forces act on bolt A as shown. Determine the resultant of forces on the bolt.

6. Knowing that α= 35˚, determine the resultant of the three forces shown.

7. For the collar of problem (6), determine (a) the required value of α if the resultant of
the three forces shown is to be vertical, (b) the corresponding magnitude of the resultant.
8. A barge is pulled by two tugboats. If the resultant of the forces
exerted by the tugboats is 5000 N force directed along the axis of the
barge, (a) determine the tension in each of the ropes knowing that α=
45˚. (b) the value of α for which the tension in the rope 2 is minimum.

9. Two cables are tied together at C and loaded as shown. Draw the
Free body diagram needed to determine tension in AC and BC. Fig: 8

10. Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Determine the tension (a) in
cable AC, (b) in cable BC.

11. Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Knowing that P = 500 N and
α = 60˚, determine the tension in (a) in cable AC, (b) in cable BC.

12. Two forces of magnitude TA= 8 N and TB= 15 N are applied as shown to a welded
connection. Knowing that the connection is in equilibrium, determine the magnitude of the
forces TC and TD.

13. Two cables are tied together at C and loaded as shown. Knowing that P= 360 N,
determine the tension (a) in cable AC, (b) in cable BC.

14. Two forces P and Q are applied as shown to an aircraft connection. Knowing that the
connection is in equilibrium and that P= 500 N and Q = 650 N, determine the magnitudes of
the forces exerted on the rods A and B.

15. Express the force F shown in Fig 15 as a cartesian vector.

16. A tower guy wire is anchored by means of a bolt at A. The tension in the wire is 2500
N. Determine (a) the components of the force acting on the bolt, (b) the angles defining
the direction of the force.

17. The lamp has a weight of 15 N and is supported by the six cords connected together as
shown. Determine the tension in each cord and the angle θ for equilibrium. Cord BC is
horizontal.

18. Determine the stretch in each spring for the equilibrium of 2 kg block. The spring are
shown in the equilibrium position.

19. If the spring DB has an unstretched length of 2 m, determine the stiffness of the
spring to hold the 40 kg crate in the position shown.

24. Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown. Determine the vertical force P
exerted by the balloon at A knowing that the tension in cable AD is 481 N.

25. Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown. Knowing that the balloon exerts an
800 N vertical force at A, determine the tension in each cable.

26. A horizontal circular plate weighing 60 N is suspended as shown from three wires that
are attached to a support at D and form 30˚ angles with the vertical. Determine the
tension in each wire.
