BALL SKILLS FOR BASKETBALL

Ball Handling

 Controlling the Basketball

 Fundamental Skill for every Basketball Player
 Dribbling, shooting, passer and shooter
 Preferably Practiced daily

TIPS ON PROPER HANDLING

1. The key to all ball control is the use of the fingers and thumb on both the right and left hand.

2. In dribbling, passing and shooting the ball should fit the full length of the fingers and thumb and
these should be spread wide and grip the ball when in contact.
3. The best way to learn how to handle the ball is turn one hand face up and spread the fingers and
thumb as wide apart as possible and then place the ball in the hand.

4. The player will notice that the ball fits in the fingers with the palm and bottom of the hand off
the ball. In addition the side of the thumb fits the ball.
5. Some players grip is too hard, causing the ball to move up onto the pads of the fingers and more
especially the pad of the thumb. This reduces the control of the ball.

6. Ideally some ball handling drills should be done everyday but at least three days a week.
