Phase Change Operations
• Phase change such as melting and evaporation are usually accompanied by large
changes in internal energy and enthalpy
• Latent heat
• Specific enthalpy change associated with the phase at constant temperature and
pressure.
• Heat of fusion or heat of melting, ΔĤm (T,P)
• Specific enthalpy different between solid and liquid forms of species at T & P
• Heat of solidification (liquid to solid) is –ve value of heat of fusion.
• Heat of vaporization, ΔĤv (T,P)
• Specific enthalpy different between liquid and vapor forms of species at T & P
• Heat of condensation (vapor to liquid) is –ve value of heat of vaporization.
• The latent heat of phase change may vary considerably with the temperature at
which the changes occurs but hardly varies with the pressure at the transition point.

from 20°C to 300°C. Calculate the
required rate of heat input in kW if
the flow rate of the gas is 2 x 103

A stream of ethylene glycol (C2H6O2) vapor at 250°C and 1
atm flowing at a rate of 170 kg/min is to be condensed at
constant pressure. The condenser is operated at 80%
efficiency. The product streams from the condenser are at
120°C. Given that the heat capacity for ethylene glycol
vapor is 0.58 kJ/mol∙°C. With a complete drawing, calculate
the rate (kW) at which heat must be transferred from the
condenser.

QUESTION 1 (PO2, CO2, C3-C4)

A 2000L STP/min of gas stream at temperature of 20 oC containing 35 mol% of nitrogen, 30 mol% hydrogen and
the balance oxygen is fed to a heater. In the heater, the gas is heated to temperature range of (100-150) oC before
fed to a reactor for ammonium nitrate production.

(a) Choose one temperature from the proposed heated temperature range and calculate the input heat required by
the system. Support the calculation with process flow diagram. Take 25 oC, 1 atm and gas state for the nitrogen,
hydrogen and oxygen as reference condition.

(b) The input heat is supplied by a stream of saturated steam at 3 bar which flows counter currently and merges as
saturated liquid at 1 bar. Determine the required amount of saturated steam to heat the gas stream and support the
calculation with assumption and process flow diagram.
