MA2002 Calculus Homework Assignment 1

IMPORTANT:
(1) Write your answers on A4 size papers.
(2) Write down your student number and name clearly on the top left corner of every
page of the answer script.
(3) Write the page number on the top right corner of each page of the answer script.
(4) To submit your answer scripts, scan or take pictures of your work (make sure
the images can be read clearly). Merge all your images into one pdf file (make
sure they are in order of the page). Name the pdf file by Student No homework1
(e.g. A123456Z homework1). Upload your pdf to the Canvas Assignments, under
Homework 1.

The assignment carries a total of 60 marks. Please submit your script by 15 February
(Thursday).†.

†5-mark penalty applies to submissions after the deadline but by 16th February 2024 (Friday). No
submission is acceptable thereafter except for students with valid reasons. For details of valid reasons
and submissions after deadlines, refer to Canvas>Files>Information>Assignment Calendar.pdf

MA2002 CALCULUS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 1 2

2x − 1 √
1. Let f (x) = and g(x) = x2 + 3x. Find following functions and their domains.
x+1
(i) f ◦ g, (ii) g ◦ f , [4]

2. Let f and g be functions defined on R where f is an even function and g is an odd

function. Prove that
(i) f · (g ◦ g) is an odd function.
(ii) f + (g ◦ f ) is an even function.
Here, + means addition, · means multiplication and ◦ means the composition of func-
tions [4]

3. Let h(x) = |3 − x| + 5 x2 + x + 1. Suppose that h(x) = f (x) + g(x) where f (x) is an
even function and g(x) is an odd function. Find f (x) and g(x). [4]

4. For each of the following, evaluate the limit. (L’Hôpital’s rule is not allowed.)
4x3 − 3x − 1
(a) lim1 . [4]
x→− 2 4x4 + 4x3 + 5x2 + 4x + 1
x3 − 5x2 + 8x − 4
(b) lim . [4]
x→2 x4 − 11x2 + 12x + 4
√
(c) lim x − x2 − 3x . [4]
x→∞

(x3 − a3 ) sin(ax)
(d) lim , where a > 0 is a real number. Give your answer in terms of
x→a x 3 − a2 x
a, and in exact and simplified form. [4]
√ √
3x2 + ax − a2 − 2x2 − ax + 2a2
(e) lim , where a > 0 is a real number. Give your
x→a sin(x − a)
answer in terms of a, and in exact and simplified form. [4]

1 1 1 1
(f) lim x . (Hint: Prove that − 1 < ≤ and use Squeeze theorem.) [4]
x→0 x x x x

5. Prove the following limits using only the precise definition of limits.
(a) lim (x2 − x) = 6. [4]
x→3

(b) lim x2 + 5 = 3. [4]
x→2

(c) lim 5 − x2 = 1. [4]
x→2

x+1
(e) lim = 1. [4]
x→∞ x + 2

6. Let r1 and r2 be the roots of f (x) = ax2 − 2x + 20. Prove that the roots can be labeled
so that lim+ r1 = 10 and lim+ r2 = ∞. (You can use intuitive definition of limits to
a→0 a→0
compute the results.) [4]
