MOTION UNDER THE GRAVITY

1. Consider the upward direction as positive, then
u = +u ms −1 , a = g = −10 ms−2 and s = +80 m
1
Since, s = ut + 2 at 2 , so we get

80 = ut − 5t 2
⇒ 5t 2 − ut + 80 = 0
u + √u2 − 1600
⇒t=
10
u − √u2 − 1600
and
10
Now it is given that these two instants, when the ball is at 80 m from the ground have an interval
of 6 s in between. So,
u + √u2 − 1600 u − √u2 − 1600
− =6
10 10
√u2 −1600
⇒ =6
5

⇒ √u2 − 1600 = 30
⇒ u2 − 1600 = 900
⇒ u2 = 2500
⇒ u = ±50 ms−1
⇒ |u| = 50 ms−1
2. Let the upward direction be taken as positive.
Let the particles meet at a distance y from the ground.
For particle B
y0 = +100 m
u=0
a = −10 ms−2
1
Since y = y0 + ut + 2 at 2
1
⇒ y = 100 + 0(t) − × 10 × t 2
2
⇒ y = 100 − 5t 2

For particle B
y0 = 0 m
u = +50 ms −1
a = −10 ms−2
1
⇒ y = 50(t) − 2 × 10 × t 2

⇒ y = 50t − 5t 2
According to the problem
50t − 5t 2 = 100 − 5t 2
⇒ t =2s
Putting t = 2 s in equation
3. Let the total time of journey be n seconds. Then
a
snth = u + 2 (2n − 1)
10
⇒ 45 = 0 + (2n − 1)
2

⇒n =5s
So, 5th second is the last second of motion. Hence height of tower is given by
1
h = gt 2
2
1
⇒ h = (10)(5)2
2
⇒ h = 125 m
4. Let h be the height of the tower. Taking downward direction as positive, we get
1
for the body projected upward, h = −ut1 + gt12
2
1
for the body projected downward, h = ut 2 + 2 gt 22
1 1
for the freely falling body, h = 0 + 2 gt 2 = 2 gt 2

Multiplying equation (1) by t 2 , we get

1
ht 2 = −ut1 t 2 + gt12 t 2
2
Multiplying equation (2) by t1 , we get
1
ht1 = ut1 t 2 + 2 gt 22 t1

Adding (1) and (2), we get

1 1 1
h(t1 + t 2 ) = 2 gt12 t 2 + 2 gt 22 t1 = 2 gt1 t 2 (t1 + t 2 )

1
⇒ h = 2 gt1 t 2
1 1 1
⇒ 2 gt 2 = 2 gt1 t 2 {∵ h = 2 gt 2 from equation (3) }

⇒ t 2 = t1 t 2
⇒ t = √t 1 t 2

5. s = ut + 2 at 2
1
⇒ −60 = 5(t) + 2 (−10)t 2

⇒ −60 = 5t − 5t 2
⇒ 5t 2 − 5t − 60 = 0
⇒ t 2 − t − 12 = 0
⇒ t 2 − 4t + 3t − 12 = 0
⇒ (t − 4)(t + 3) = 0
⇒ t= 4s
Height of balloon from ground at this instant is
h = 60 + (4)(5)
⇒ h = 80 m
6.
Let the two particles meet at A after a time t For first particle,
h 1 2
= gt
n 2
For second particle,
h 1
(h − ) = ut − gt 2
n 2
Adding equations (1) and (2), we get
h = ut
h
⇒ t=u

Substituting the value of t from equation (3) in e tion (1), we get

h 1 h 2
= g( )
n 2 u
1
⇒ u2 = ngh
2
ngh
⇒ u=√ 2

Velocity v1 of first particle at A is given by

h h
v12 = u12 + 2g ( ) = 0 + 2g ( )
n n
Velocity v2 of second particle at A is given by
h
v22 = u2 − 2g (h − )
n
1 1
⇒ v22 = 2 ngh − 2gh (1 − n)
n 1
⇒ v22 = gh [2 − 2 (1 − n)]

n 2 n2 − 4n + 4
⇒ v22 = gh ( − 2 + ) = gh ( )
2 n 2n
(n − 2)2
⇒ v22 = gh
2n
Dividing equation (5) by equation (6), we get
2gh
v12 n 4gh

v22 (n − 2)2 gh(n − 2)2
gh 2n
v 2
⇒ v1 = n−2

7. Let u be the velocity of projection of the particle. Then

1
h = uT − 2 gT 2
1
⇒ uT = h + 2 gT 2
h 1 2h+gT2
⇒ u = T + 2 gT = 2T

If H be the greatest height reached, then

0 = u2 − 2gH
2
2h+gT2
⇒ 0=( ) − 2gH
2T
2
(2h+gT2 )
⇒ H= 8gT2

8. For the motion of the rocket for first minute

u1 = 0, a1 = 30msec −2
⇒ t1 = 60sec.
Let v1 be the velocity of the rocket after one minute (60sec.), then
v1 = u1 + a1 t1 = 0 + 30 × 60 = 1800msec −1
Height h1 attained is

1 1
h1 = a1 t12 = × 30 × (60)2
2 2
⇒ h1 = 54000 metre
When the fuel is used up,
u2 = 1800msec −1 , v2 = 0 and a2 = −10msec −2
(1800)2
⇒ h2 = = 162000 metre
2+10

(a) Maximum height reached = h1 + h2

⇒ hmax = 54000 + 162000
⇒ hmax = 216,000 metre
(b) Let t 2 be the time for the journey when fuel is used up, then
v2 − u2 1800
t2 = = = 180sec.
a2 10
1
Again let t 3 be the time for descent, then using the formula h = 2 gt 23 , we have
1
216000 = × 10 × t 23
2
⇒ t 23 = 43200
⇒ t 3 = (43200)1/2 = 207.8sec.
Hence total time elapsed is
T = t1 + t 2 + t 3 = 60 + 180 + 207.8
T = 447.8sec.
1
9. s1 = 2 vmax t1
1
⇒ s1 = 2 (10)(5) = 25 m

Hence, the correct answer is (A).

10. Take downward direction as positive, we get

1
−h = −ut1 + gt12
2
1
−h = −ut 2 + 2 gt 22

Subtracting (2) from (1), we get

1
0 = u(t 2 − t1 ) + g(t12 − t 22 )

14. A → (r)
B → (p)
C → (s)
D → (q)
After 2 s velocity of balloon and hence the velocity of the particle will be 20 ms −1 (= at) and its
1
height from the ground will be 20 m (= 2 at 2 ). Now g, will start acting on the particle.

15. To an observer on the balloon, the ground is a moving frame.
