BEED 2A

Will DepEd require all teachers to be ICT competent?

In a world we live in where change is only constant, everything goes at a fast pace. Living in a
society where information is advancing quickly and current technologies are requiring teachers
to become proficient in their use, teaching is quickly becoming one of the most difficult
occupations. Adapting to technology is not a one-snapshot thing people can do for those teachers
who are so-called “old school” or obsolete ones.

As a learner who is surrounded by a family of teachers, I can say that requiring all teachers to be
ICT competent looks complicated. To some, it’s easy, and to others, it's not. I have an aunt who
is a teacher in elementary school, and from what I’ve observed, she finds it hard to use
technology when she does her paperwork. Even though she attended seminars, it’s still
troublesome for her. For a variety of reasons, including the ratio of student to teacher computers,
inadequate training in ICT integration, a lack of confidence and competence in ICT, a lack of
technical support, and limited accessibility to ICT resources, integrating ICT into the teaching
and learning process continues to be a difficult task for teachers today. Before requiring teachers
to be ICT competent, maybe the best thing to do is for the Department of Education to see first
that there are really a lot of factors that need to be considered before requiring all teachers to be
ICT competent, especially the teachers who are assigned to far-flung areas. Being a teacher is
already hard, and being competent in the field of ICT is on another level.

If only teachers are given attention, information and communication technology (ICT) can give
educators better and more adaptable options for their personal growth. Requiring educators to be
ICT competent will not only enhance teacher preparation but also strengthen their ties to the
worldwide teacher community if they are only provided with the resources that they need and
less paperwork. I think teachers can really be competent, either with the help of technology or
not.
