Phonological Level

Couplet: The poem is considered as a sonnet, a fourteen-line poem with a


specific rhyme scheme. Each stanza of the poem, it do consist of two
rhyming lines, making them couplets. Here is an example:

Rhyme Scheme: The poem follows an ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme


scheme. This consistent rhyme scheme brings a sense of order and
reinforces the argument of the poem.

Alliteration: There are also places of alliteration, such as “Death, be not


proud” and “soonest our best men with thee do go.” These places add
emphasis to the places of all key points.

Assonance: There are also many assonances, such as “though some have
called thee Mighty and dreadful,” where the repeated “o” adds to the
formality and mass of the description.

Repetition: Repetition plays a significant role. The opening line “Death,


be not proud” is repeated for emphasis, and the word “Death” is
continually used to reinforce the addressee.
