words without both
subject and verb.

2 TYPES OF PHRASES
1. NOUN PHRASE
- A phrase that acts like a
noun in the sentence.
- It contains a noun and other
related words which modify
the noun.
Formula:
Determiner +
Modifier + Noun
Determiner – is a
word used at the
beginning of a noun to
indicate which thing you
are referring to.
Ex. a, an, the
A, An,
The
Modifier – a
word or group of
words that modifies a
Noun. Usually an
adjective.
Noun – a
name of person,
place, thing, animal
etc.
Example:

Delia had a weak heart.

2. VERB PHRASE
- a combination of
helping verb and a main
verb within a sentence.
Helping Verbs
-it is most generally understood as
a verb that helps another verb.
Three types of verbs:
Linking verbs - am, is, are,
was, were,
Auxiliary Verbs - has, have,
had, did, do, does, can, could,
will, would, should, shall,
may, might, must
Main Verb – walks, talks
Formula:
LV + MV (ing)
She is talking.
Formula:
AV + MV
He should wait in the
car.
They had eaten the cake.
He was walking quickly
to the mall.
