SUNDAY REFLECTION
September 03, 2023

The gospel is from Matthew 16:21–27. In the gospel, Jesus begins to describe
the journey that awaits him to his disciples. This is the path of adversity, rejection,
and the cross. Jesus is imparting a powerful message to his disciples for the people to
know about him and for his message to be passed down through the generations.

What message does Jesus want us to understand? It is evident that Jesus

stated, "If you wish to come after me, take your cross and follow me." This may not
seem like a heavy statement to those who did not understand, but it is a clear
revelation to us.

Matthew 16:21-27 reminds us that we must carry our own cross and follow
Jesus to heaven. We may find ourselves resisting all the trials and sufferings that life
throws at us. However, Jesus reminds us that the path of discipleship can be difficult.
Each of us must carry our own cross. It is a call to surrender our own desires,
comforts, and aspirations to follow Christ. The cross symbolizes sacrifice. Jesus
emphasizes that this is not an option, but rather a must for discipleship.

In our daily lives, we are to examine our priorities and make choices. The
gospel reminds us that following Christ's path is not always easy, but it is always
worthwhile and rewarding. As we take up our crosses and follow him, we experience
his presence, peace, and the promise of eternal life. Whatever burden we have today,
whether it is family matters, finances, or work, we must all surrender to him. The
only way to overcome it all is through Jesus alone. Trust, and we will receive what
our heart desires.
