Sheet no. (1) Revision

1- A uniform line charge with 𝜌𝑙 = 50 μC/m lies along the x axis (as shown on
Fig. 1). What flux per unit length, Ψ/L, crosses the portion of the 𝑧 = −3 m
plane bounded by 𝑦 = + −2 m?

2- In cylindrical coordinates a vector field is given by 𝑨 = 𝑟 sin 𝜑 𝒂𝒓 +

𝑟 2 cos 𝜑 𝒂𝝋 + 2𝑟𝑒 −5𝑧 𝒂𝒛 . Find div A at (1/2, π/2, 0).

3- Given that 𝑫 = 𝒂𝒙 (c/m2), evaluate both sides of the divergence theorem
3
for the volume of a cube, 2 m on an edge, centered at the origin and with
edges parallel to the axes.
4- Given 𝑨 = (𝑦 cos 𝑎𝑥)𝒂𝒙 + (𝑦 + 𝑒 𝑥 )𝒂𝒛 , find curl A (∇ × 𝑨) at the origin.
5- Given the general vector field 𝑨 = 5𝑟 sin 𝜑 𝒂𝒛 in cylindrical coordinates,
find curl A at (2, π, 0).
6- A line charge 𝜌𝑙 = 400 pC/m lies along the x axis and the surface of zero
potential passes through the point (0, 5, 12) m in Cartesian coordinates (as
shown in Fig. 2). Find the potential at (2, 3, -4) m.

7- Two concentric conducting spheres of radii 20 and 60mm. The evacuated

region between them is filled by a dielectric with r = 2.5. Let the inner sphere
has a surface charge density 𝜌𝑠 =20 nC/m2. Determine the electric field and
the voltage between the two spheres.
8- A charge distribution with spherical symmetry has density:
𝜌𝑜 𝑟
, 0≤𝑟≤𝑎
𝜌𝑣 = { 𝑎
0, 𝑟>𝑎
where 𝜌𝑜 is constant. Determine E and V everywhere.
9- A conducting sphere of radius 5 cm has a total charge of 1 µC. The sphere is
surrounded by an inhomogeneous dielectric shell 5≤ r ≤ 10 cm, in which the
relative permittivity varies with radius as r (r) = 0.1/r. A second conducting
surface is at r = 10 cm. Calculate potential difference between the conductors.
10- Find the potential difference between the following surface charge
distributions: (i) Two parallel infinite sheets having respective surface-charge
density +𝜌𝑠 and −𝜌𝑠 and spacing d, (ii) Two coaxial cylinders of surface
charge having infinite length and respective radii a and b. The total charge per
unit length on the inner cylinder is 𝜌𝑙 while on the outer cylinder is −𝜌𝑙 .
