Title: "Understanding the Impacts of Social Media on Mental Health: A Systematic Review"

Abstract:

Social media platforms have become integral parts of daily life for billions of people worldwide, shaping

social interactions, information sharing, and self-expression. However, concerns have been raised about

the potential negative impacts of excessive social media use on mental health and well-being. This paper

presents a systematic review of the existing literature to comprehensively understand the relationships

between social media usage and mental health outcomes. Through the synthesis of empirical studies from

psychology, sociology, communication studies, and public health, we explore various dimensions of the

complex interplay between social media engagement and mental health indicators, including depression,

anxiety, loneliness, self-esteem, and body image concerns. We examine potential mechanisms underlying

these associations, such as social comparison, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), and online

disinhibition. Furthermore, we discuss methodological considerations and research gaps in the current

literature, as well as implications for mental health interventions and policy development. By shedding

light on the nuanced relationships between social media use and mental health outcomes, this paper aims

to inform individuals, educators, healthcare providers, and policymakers about the challenges and

opportunities associated with digital media consumption in the digital age.
