Directions: Using your smartphones, take a picture of five (5) common activities/ scenarios on which
heat transfer is applied. It may be material, event or situation. Classify each whether it is conduction,
convection or radiation. Provide brief explanation to support your answer. Post the picture and your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.
PICTURE KIND OF HEAT BRIEF
TRANSFER EXPLANATION
Conduction Conduction occurs when heat
is transferred from a hotter
object to a cooler one through
direct contact. For example,
when you hold a hot cup of
water, heat from the water is
conducted to your hands. The
molecules in the cup vibrate
more rapidly due to the heat,
and when your hands touch the
cup, these rapidly vibrating
molecules transfer their energy
to the molecules in your hands,
causing them to also vibrate
and resulting in the sensation
of warmth or heat in your
hands.
Conduction
Ironing clothes demonstrates
conduction. As you iron, the
hot surface of the iron touches
the fabric directly. Heat
transfers through the fabric,
loosening its fibers and
eliminating wrinkles. This
conduction process aids in the
clothes appearing tidy and
pressed.
Convection
Boiling water illustrates
convection. When you heat
water in a container, the heat
moves to the bottom, causing
the water there to expand and
rise. Meanwhile, the cooler,
denser water at the top
descends. This circulation
forms a convection current,
with hot water ascending and
cooler water descending.

Conduction When a person sleeps on a

pillow, the heat from their body
is transferred to the pillow
through conduction. The person's
body is warmer than the pillow,
so heat flows from the person to
the pillow until they are both at
the same temperature. This is
why the pillow feels warm when
you touch it after the person has
been sleeping on it. This is a
classic example of conduction
where heat is transferred
through direct contact.
Radiation UV rays from the sun are an
example of radiation because
they are a form of energy emitted
by the sun in the form of
electromagnetic waves. Unlike
conduction or convection, which
involve the transfer of heat
through direct contact or
movement of matter, radiation
does not require a medium to
transfer energy. UV rays travel
through space and can penetrate
the Earth’s atmosphere, reaching
the surface and causing effects
like sunburn and skin damage.
