4 A car travelling at an initial speed of v m/s decelerates uniformly for 4 seconds, then travels at
a uniform speed of 5 m/s for 8 seconds before decelerating uniformly until it comes to a
complete rest. The speed-time graph for the car is shown below.

(a) A van, starting at the same time as the car from the same initial point travels along
the same route at a uniform speed of 11 m/s throughout the journey. On the graph
above, draw the line representing the speed-time graph of the van, given that v > [1]
11.

(b) It is given that deceleration is represented by the gradient of the speed-time graph. The
deceleration of the car during the first 4 seconds is 3.75 m/s2. Show that v = 20.

travelled. At how many seconds, after the car and the van started from the initial
point, will the van overtake the car?

(c) It is given that the area under the speed-time graph represents the distance
travelled. At how many seconds, after the car and the van started from the initial
point, will the van overtake the car?

Check when t = 4,
Distance by van = 11 4 = 44m M1

Distance by car = = 50m M1

So, van will overtakes at t seconds.

M1
11t = 50 +5t – 20
6t = 30
t=5 A1
The van will overtake the car at 5 seconds.
