SYSTEM OF

MEASUREMENTS
SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENTS
A system of measurements is a set
of units that can be used to specify
anything that can be measured.
These are common units of
measurement used in making layout
and installation of electrical
materials.
Linear Measures
The English system provides a creative
way for how people can measure
themselves.
• Inch
• Yard
• miles
English units and Each
Equivalent

12 inches(“)= 1 foot (‘) or (ft.)

1 foot= 3 yards (yd)
1 yard= 36 inches
English units and Each
Equivalent

To convert feet to inches,

simply multiply the length in
feet by 12
Example:
3 feet multiply by 12
It is equivalent to 36
English units and Each
Equivalent
Convert inches to feet (12 inches= 1
foot),
Simply divide by 12
For example:
36 inches convert to feet
36/12 = 3 feet
Try it!
1. Feet convert to Yards ( 1 foot= 3 yards)
11 ft.=_____yd.
Answer: 33 yd.
2. Yards convert to inches (1 yd.= 36 inches)
396 inches =__yd.
Answer= 11 yd.
Metric System
• is a decimalized system of measurement. It
exists in several variations with different
choices of base units. Metric units are
widely used around the world for personal,
commercial, and specific purposes.
• Simpler and easier to use than a traditional
measurement system.
Metric Units
• different metric units are depending
on what we want to measure:
• Meter (m): Length
• Liter (l): Volume
• Gram (g): Mass
• Celsius (C): Temperature
• These are called BASE UNIT!
PREFIXES MATTER
• When you add a prefix to a base unit
you change its value.
• Kilo- = 1000
• Hecto- = 100
• Deca- = 10
• Deci- = .1 (1/10)
• Centi- = .01 (1/100)
• Milli- = .001 (1/1000)
Example:
Convert meter to centimeter
1 m = 100 cm
2.9mx 100cm= 290 cm
1 1m
Or
2.9m
2. 9 0 = 290 cm
Try it!
Convert Kilometer to Meter
1 kilometer= 1000m
1.5 km = ____m
Solution:
1.5km x 1000 m = 1500 m
1 1km
Ladder method: 1. 5 0 0 = 1500 m
Example
1 cm = 1/100000 km
1.6/100000 = 0.000016km
Or
0 0 0 0 1. 6
=0.000016 km
Try it!
Convert meter to kilometer
1 m= 1/1000km
5m=_______km
5/1000= 0.005km
Or
0 0 5 .0 m= 0.005 km
English to Metric
Equivalent
1 inch= 2.54 cm
1 foot= 30.48 cm
1 yard= 81.44 cm
Try it!

3 inches= ____meter
Solutions:
3 inches= 7.62 centimeters
7.62/100= 0.076 meter
Measuring Length
To measure length, we use a ruler.
10 millimeters = 1 centimeter
What is the length of the line in
centimeters?
What is the length of the line in
millimeters?
Activity
Directions: the first group will go to
measure the blackboard using dangkal
(hands). Assume that per dangkal is
equivalent to 10 centimeters. After that,
convert it to Feet.
Activity
Directions: the second group will go to
measure the teacher’s table using the
thumb. Assume that per thumb is
equivalent to 1 inch. After that, convert
it to centimeters.
Activity
Directions:
the third group will go to measure the
length using the feet. Assume that your
feet are equivalent to 1 foot. After that,
convert it to inches.
Activity
Directions: And then show your solutions
on the blackboard.
A. Quiz
Directions: Give the length of the line
in centimeters and millimeters.
1. ______cm, 2. ______mm
B. Quiz
Directions: Convert the following
given measures.

3) 3.6 km= ____________meters

EXTENSION
CORD
ASSEMBLY
Electrical gadgets and
electrical appliances make our
lives easier but there might not
be enough outlets for all our
devices and appliances. That’s
why electrical engineer S.W.
Atherton came up with the
extension cord in 1904.
Extension cords are responsible for causing 4,000
injuries and 3,300 fires every year. Out of these
injuries, half of them are caused due to tripping,
and unfortunately, 50 people lost their lives in
these fires. The Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC) reports that short circuits,
overloading, damage, and misuse of the cords are
the primary causes of these fires. (University of
Delaware, 2022)
Choosing the right extension cord for your household
electrical devices and circuits depends on the
environment and usage, plug type and power rating.

Extension cords are categorized as indoor and outdoor

cords. Generally, outdoor cords are designed to be
stronger to protect against moisture, sunlight, and
abrasion. Some cords are even designed to withstand
extreme temperatures, oil, and chemicals.
3 Categories of Outdoor
Extension Cord
1. Occasional use Cord- for smaller projects and
tools.
2. frequent use Cord- Frequent-use cords are for
handling larger tools and equipment intended for
heavier use
3. Rugged cords- Rugged cords are for continuous use
on job sites. These cords are designed to be functional
even in extreme weather with the presence of high-
amperage tools.

SELLING COST PHP 122.00

Tools and Equipment Needed:
Standard/Flat Screwdriver
1.

Philips Screwdriver
2.

Long Nose Pliers

3.

Side Cutting Pliers

4.

Electrician’s knife/ Pocket Knife

5.

Continuity Tester or Multi-tester

6.
Procedures:
• Prepare the plan.
• Gather all necessary materials, tools, and equipment
needed.
• Insert the cord into the male plug. Split the cord wires
about 8 centimeters long.
• Remove insulation of both wires 1 centimeter long with
a pocket knife as if sharpening a pencil.
• Be careful not to cut any strands.
• Scrape bare wire with the back of the knife until shiny.
Twist the wire stands.
• Tie the underwriter’s knot.
• Make a loop on terminal wires and connect the
wires to the screw of the male plug. The loop
should go with the thread in a clockwise direction.
• Split the cord wires at the other end about 4
centimeters long, then follow step no. 4.
• Connect the wires to the connectors.
• Open the convenience outlet then remove the
screw.
• Insert the wire connectors into the screws, tighten
them, and replace the cover.
• Check the continuity and test the extension cord.
That’s all
for today.
