D1.3 Airport Characteristics

(a) Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand State. It is located in the


Doon Valley at the foothills of Himalayas. Jolly Grant Airport or
more commonly known as Dehradun Airport is controlled by
Airports Authority of India and located 25km South-East of
Dehradun City.
(b) Topography: The aerodrome is located at the foothills of
Himalayas. It is surrounded by hills in N, NE and East direction
while towards West and South the topography is flat and the land
slope is gentle.
(c) Fire Fighting Facilities: CAT- 6 (avlbl 0430 to 1230 UTC).
(d) Bird Activity: Throughout the year. Pilots to exercise caution.
(e) Fuel: Jet A-1
(f) RWY Lighting: NIL.

the months from June to September.

(f) Arrival and Departure Procedures:

Arrival :
i. The ONLY runway for landing is Rwy 08 because the LDA
for Rwy 26 is only 1111 m and there is no PAPI for Rwy 26.
ii. No STARs. Initial descent is with SARSAWA ATC (123.5 MHz)
iii. At 5 NM from VIDN contact ‘Dehradun Tower’ on 122.3 MHz
iv. Holding is permitted south of Rwy only. MHA 5600 ft between
0 0
radial 170 -260 DDN.
v. The preferred approach is ILS Rwy 08. The next preferred
approach is VOR Rwy 08.
vi. For Visual Circuits, the pattern is: RH pattern for Rwy 08
vii. Missed Approach Go Around Procedure: See Para 9 below.
viii. Assisted takeoff/landing is not authorized.

Departure :
i. All departures are from Rwy 26 only.
ii. Take Off from Rwy 08 is not authorized (due terrain ahead).
ii. LVTO is not authorized.
iii. Assisted takeoff/landing is not authorized.
iv. No SIDs.
v. After takeoff from Rwy 26, contact SARSAWA (123.5 MHz)
vi. There is Engine Failure After Take Off (EFATO) procedure (see
below).

 Rwy 08: As published in Jeppesen Approach Charts.
 Rwy 26: Approach on Rwy26 not authorized.

D1.10 Single Engine Procedures:

(a) Rwy08 Engine Out Escape Procedure:

1. Climb straight ahead on Radial 082DDN.


2. At Radial 082/D1.5DDN, commence RIGHT climbing turn towards DDN
VOR.
3. Do not exceed max bank angle 15 degrees until speed more than
V2+15 KIAS.
4. Intercept Radial 254DDN at or before D7.0 DDN (to avoid obstacles on
the left).
5. Proceed on radial 254DDN and continue climb to 5600feet to join hold
at DABGO (RADIAL 254/D10 DDN).
Note: Do not go north of R-260 DDN during hold at DABGO (due terrain).

(b) Rwy 26 Engine Out Escape Procedure (engine failure on takeoff):

In case of engine failure at or before DME2.0 DDN: Proceed towards radial


257 DDN. At radial 257/D2.0DDN, commence LEFT climbing turn towards
DDN VOR. Intercept and proceed on radial 254DDN. Continue climb to
5600feet to join the hold at DABGO.

In case of engine failure after D2.0 DDN: Turn LEFT towards DDN VOR.
Intercept and proceed on R-254 DDN. Continue climbing to 5600' to join the
hold at DABGO.

Note 1: In case of engine inoperative, Bank Angle not to exceed 15 deg until
speed more than V2+15 KIAS.
Note 2: During pre-flight, a way-point / fix is to be created for each DME point
to cater for DME failure.
Note 3: Do not go north of R-260 DDN during hold at DABGO (due
terrain).
