CCC8013 Sustainable Development Goals

Kong Pik Yu (4154196)

Introduction
Ecological footprint data of Lingnan students is examined and estimated the amount
of biologically productive areas on Earth needed to sustain our demands to obtain and
recommend a more sustainable lifestyle. Having such critical analysis could help
adjust the amount of water and energy used, food consumed, transportation, shelter,
clothing, utilities, and entertainment etc.

Students are most confident in reducing food consumption to release less CO2 and
less ecological footprint.
Average Earths needed per LU student: around 15 Earths per student(excluding
excessive numbers)
Recommendations
First, it is suggested students should also be aware of reducing release of CO2 in
transportation as it is a third top kilograms of CO2 released that shall not be neglected
as it is top 2 source of greenhouse gas emission and is major factor of pollution in
Hong Kong. Second, boost promotion on social, environmental and economic
sustainability in campus thus Lingnan students broaden their means of reduction and
allocation of resources. Third, an average Hongkonger would need 4.4 Earths while a
LU student would need 15. This is unacceptable and they should start reducing food
and clothing release immediately. Overall, awareness of reducing excessive
consumption of food and use of clothes and save water use are three main ways LU
students can create a more sustainable lifestyle.
Conclusion
Change must be made by Lingnan students. They are mostly active to limit their
ecological footprint as only 2% of the >300 interviewees are not willing to ease the
pain of Mother Earth. It is still positive for students to create a more sustainable
lifestyle in hostels and at home.
