TOPIC 7: Media Literacy and the Legal, Ethical, and Societal Issues in Media (Weeks 8-9)

PRE-COMPETENCY CHECK-LIST:

What do you think must you have in order to be called a media literate individual?

I think that in order for me to be considered media literate, I must be able to access, critically
assess, and create media. To become media literate, I must learn to ask the relevant questions
about what I am watching, reading, playing, and listening to, rather than memorize facts or
statistics about the media. I also need to be able to thoughtfully analyze media material and its
sources, assimilate selected media information into one's knowledge base, and effectively use
media information, tool, and platforms to achieve a certain goal.

Can you call yourself media literate? Why or Why not?

I think I can say that I am still learning to be a media literate because I know in my self that
there's a lot of things that I need to about various forms of media. In this online class mode of
learning, I am expose to online studying platforms or digital tools so with further studying and
exploring, I know that I might learn to be a completely media literate individual in time.

DISCUSSION BOARD:
QUESTION: In the digital era, how would you make sure that the pieces of information you
search online are credible and valid?

In the digital age, I double-check the sources credibility to ensure that the information I find
online is reliable and accurate. I check to see if the material was written by a reputable author or
institution. I normally try to identify the owner or publisher of a website by looking at the URL
or checking the copyright information. I review to see if the author has the necessary credentials
in the area or content information that I am looking for . I also look at the content to see if the
source is biased or not, the veracity of the information, the date or year it was released, the
coverage, and whether the information is backed up by credible proof.
