THEOREM 2:
The Angle in the same segment of a circle are equal.
PROVE:
GIVEN: P and Q are any point on the major arc of circle APQB.
TO PROVE: ∠APB = ∠𝐴𝑄𝐵
CONSTRUCTION: Join A and B to O, the centre of the circle.
PROOF: With the lettering in above circle
∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 = 2∠𝐴𝑃𝐵 (angle at the centre is twice that on the circumference)
= 𝑥1
∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 = 2∠𝐴𝑄𝐵 (angle at the centre is twice that on the circumference)
= 𝑥2
∴ 𝑥1 = 𝑥2 (equals ½∠𝐴𝑂𝐵)
∴ ∠𝐴𝑃𝐵 = ∠𝐴𝑄𝐵
NOTE: Since P and Q are any point on the major arc, all angles in the major
segments are equal to each other. The theorem is also true for angles in the
minor segment.
EXAMPLE
Find the lettered angles in each of the following, where a point O is given,
it is the centre of the circle
40
a
b
w
32 O
v 320 c
SOLUTION
(a)
∠𝒗 = 𝟐 × 𝟑𝟐𝟎
(angle at the w centre is twice
32 O
v that on the circumference)
∴𝒗 = 𝟔𝟒𝟎
𝒘 = 𝟑𝟐𝟎 (angles in the same segment)
(b) 40
a 𝒂 = 𝒃 = 𝟒𝟎𝟎 (angles in the same
b segment)
320 c 𝒄 = 𝟑𝟐𝟎 (angles in the
same segment)
EXERCISE
1. State the theorem proved in today’s lesson.
2. State the method that should be used in proving the above
theorem.
