QUARTER 2-WEEK 8
The Basílica Menor del Santo Niño de Cebú (Minor Basilica of the Holy Child of Cebú), commonly
known as Santo Niño Basilica, is a basilica in Cebu City in the Philippines that was founded in 1565 by
Fray Andrés de Urdaneta and Fray Diego de Herrera. It is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the
country, allegedly built on the spot where the image of the Santo Niño de Cebú was found during the
expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi.
Like most towns in the Philippines, Oslob has its own centuries-old parish church. However, this
church may be considered as relatively new since it was twice destroyed by fires and thereafter
reconstructed, the last being in 2010.
BOLJOON CHURCH (NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL PATROCINIO DE MARIA PARISH CHURCH)
Patrocinio de Maria Church in Boljoon Town is a famous historical structure built as the center of
religious activities during the Spanish occupation in the 18th century. Travelers come to see the
church structure, religious artifacts, the 'baluarte, and the fortifications still intact today.
Reflection Questions:
1.Which of the churches have you already visited?
Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño
2.Write the significant name, location, materials, and distinguishing elements of the churches
Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño is located in Cebu City. The foundation of the church is stone.
The church was originally made of bamboo and mangrove palm and claims to be the oldest
parish in the Philippines. It was rebuilt later, and Pope Paul VI elevated it to the status of
Minor Basilica on its 400th anniversary (Spanish: Basílica Menor del Santo Niño).
Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is located in Oslob, Cebu. The church is built
on limestone, but recent renovations had the roof in galvanized steel. This made the church
loose its historical appeal.
Boljoon Church (Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio de Maria Parish Church) is located in Boljoon,
Cebu. The edifice has thick walls made of coral slabs and high windows. It is said that this
design was meant to serve two purposes: first, a place of worship and second, a sturdy wall of
refuge against the invading Moro pirates. According to some experts, Patrocinio de Maria
Church is the only existing fortress church which has an intact fortification until changes were
made in the late 20th century for the sake of development.
3.How will you describe them personally?
Base on my own observations, I can say that these churches represents the rich culture of our
country even before. These churches also showcase the baroque style of arts.
4.What are the influences of Renaissance and Baroque that were found in those churches?
I can say that renaissance and baroque style of art greatly impacts to how these churches are
built specifically with the elements and designs used. Also these churches proves the talents
of the artists and architects behind these churches and infrastructures.
