1.0 INTRODUCTION

The sub-soil investigations work For Proposed construction of Reconstruction of Minor

Bridge from Dainadubi-Darugiri-William Nagar( NH-217) at ( Ch: 3+280 km) was entrusted to us.

The report presented herein deals with the field and laboratory investigations carried out
by us to asses the nature of sub-soil strata and to evaluate the soil parameters required for
design of foundations for the proposed structures.

2.0 DETAILS OF SITE:

The site is basically plain in terrain and also one of the world's most seismically active
region. Thus it is important for the structural designer to give adequate consideration to this
sensitive fact while designing the structure to avoid any irreparable catastrope in the future.
Further the site falls in the seismic zone-v of India as per I.S. 1893 (Part-1) : 2002; I.S. Criteria for
Earthquake resistant design of structures.

3.0 SCOPE OF WORK:

The scope of work provided to us for this project was limited to the following :-

1. Mobilization of equipment and personnel to the project site, setting up of the equipment and
carry out the field investigations at site and demobilization of the same on completion of work.

2. Making boreholes for 150 mm diameter in 1 (one) nos. of borehole up to a depth of 14.00m or
up to refusal, below existing ground level and as per instructions of field Engineer-in-Charge,
through all types of clayey or sandy soil, except gravel/rock layer.

3. Disturbed/undisturbed soil samples are to be collected from each borehole at regular intervals
in depth or change of strata, whichever is earlier as per I.S.2132 and as per instruction of field
Engineer-in-Charge. The samples are to be collected and transported to the laboratory for testing
in accordance with the standard and general practice.
4. Standard penetration Tests are to be conducted in each borehole at 1.5m interval in depth or
charge of Strata, which ever is earlier as per I.S. 2131 and as per instruction of field Engineer-in-
Charge.

5. Recording the depth of ground water table in each borehole (if observed).

6. Following laboratory test are to be conducted as per relevant I.S. code of practice.
a. Particle Size Analysis,
b. Moisture content,
c. Bulk-density,
d. Atterberg's limit test,
e. Specific Gravity,
f. Direct Shear Test (DST),
g. Unconfined Compression Test (UCT)
h. Undrained Triaxial Test (TAT)
i. Consolidation Test
7. Preparation and submission of Soil Report.

4.0 INVESTIGATION :
The sub-soil investigation consists of both field exploration, field test and
laboratory tests as per relevant I.S. code of practice.

5.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION AND COLLECTION OF SAMPLES :

5.01 Boring was done by wash boring technique, conforming to I.S. 1892-1962.

5.02 Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was conducted in each borehole at every 1.5m interval or
at every change of strata, which is earlier as per relevant I.S. Code of practice.

5.03 Disturbed (D) and undisturbed (UD) soil samples were collected at regular interval as per
relevant I.S. code of practice.

5.04 The depth of ground water table was checked/measured in the boreholes after completion
of boring works, as per relevant I.S. Code of practice.
6.0 LABORATORY INVESTIGATION :

Representative soil samples obtained from the site under consideration were
analysed in the laboratory. In conducting the laboratory tests relevant I.S. code
of practice were followed and results of the laboratory tests are tabulated in borelogs
respectively. The following laboratory tests have been conducted as given below:
1. Particle Size Analysis,
2. Moisture content,
3. Bulk-density,
4. Specific gravity,
5. Atterberg's limit test,
6. Unconfined Compression Test (UCT)
7. Direct Shear Test (DST)
Further, the soil samples were identified and classified as per I.S. 1498-1970 &
results are tabulated in Bore logs- Table no. 1 respectively.

7.0 TEST RESULTS AND INTERPRETATIONS:

1. Sub-soil description and classification:

The bore logs of borehole BH1 have been prepared in Table No. 1 as per
relevant I.S. code of practices.
Detailed variations of sub-soil layers and other soil parameters are given in
respective bore logs.

8.0 ANALYSIS OF FOUNDATION:

(A) FOR SHALLOW FOUNDATION:
(i) For Isolated Footing:
The net safe bearing capacity (qds), safe bearing capacity (qs) have been
computed from shear parameters as per guidelines of I.S. 6403-1981(1990), "Code of practice for
Determination of Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations".
The detailed calculation are shown in Annexure-I. The factor of safety equal to
three (S.F. =3), has been considered as per I.S. guidelines.
The safe bearing pressures (Ps) of soil have been evaluated considering 75mm
permissible settlement as per guidelines of IS 1904-1986(1995) and IS 8009
(Part-I) 1976 (1993)'code of practice for calculation of settlements of foundations (Part-I: shallow
foundations subjected to symmetrical static vertical loads)'.
The allowable bearing capacity (qa) has been computed as per guidelines of IS:
6403-1981(1990).
The detailed calculation are shown in Annexure- I
The results are tabulated in Table No. A Table for bearing capacities of soil for
shallow foundation.

9.0 Conclusion and Recommendation of foundation

From the above investigation it is observed that sub soil layers below bed level are mostly
composition of clay sand, boulder and cobbles. Rock or big boulder may be encountered
beyond the borehole location.

Hence shallow foundation is recommended over a 500mm sand gravel cushioning for the
site by this end.

The bearing capacity of soil for shallow foundation (Isolated Footing) are given in Table
No. A, in respect of depth of foundation

The designer may use the allowable bearing capacity of soil (qa) in respect of depth and
borehole location for design purposes.

It is recommended that, proper plate load test to be carried out for arriving at the final
safe bearing capacity of soil.
Further , it is mention here that the depth of foundation may varry during construction
due to presence of big boulder or rock.
