SPORTS

is an activity that requires physical actions and skills

where individuals or teams compete under a set of rules.

Section 19, Article XIV

THE STATE SHALL PROMOTE PHYSICAL

EDUCATION AND ENCOURAGE SPORTS

PROGRAMS, LEAGUE, AND AMATEUR SPORTS,

INCLUDING TRAINING FOR INTERNATIONAL

COMPETITIONS, TO FOSTER SELF DISCIPLINE,

TEAM WORK, AND EXCELLENCE FOR THE

DEVELOPMENT OF A HEALTHY AND ALERT

CITZENRY.

(2) all educational institution shall undertake regular

sports activities throughout the country in cooperation

with athletic clubs and other sectors.

Types of Sports

Sport is classified into:

Individual sports

• Dual sports

• Team sports

Individual sports are played by one participant on each

competing side

Dual Sports are played by two competing pairs

Team Sports are played by three or more players

Individual sports foster a higher amount of discipline,

self-confidence, focus, and passion

Team sports many variables are considered to determine

the success or failure of the team. It depends on the

about the earliest times of sports.

China - There are artifacts and structures that

suggest that the Chinese engaged in sporting

activities as early as 4000 BC


Egypt – monuments to the Pharaohs indicate that a

as the traditional Iranian martial art of

ZOURKHANEH had a close connrction to the

warfare skills.

TERMINOLOGIES

Athletes– pertain to the players in sport

Athletics – organized, highly structured, competitive

activities in which skilled individuals participate

(Lumpkin, 1998)

coach – the formal authority within the team


Competition – refers to the competitive sport or

tournament

Court – the Physical facility/venue where sports are

played.

Equipment – usually heavy and well built materials

used in sport

Exercise – activity which means to participate, to

strengthen, or to terms need to be understood (Lumpkin

1998)

Game – synonymous to a match governed by rules and

regulations. It is also pertains to recreational activities

that are not considered as a sport ( ex: card games,

internet games etc.)

Leisure – pertains to available time used from work ,

obligations and responsibilities

Match – refers to entire game characterized by number,

time, and order.

Official – the person or group of individuals who have the full jurisdiction

over the game.

Play – the act of playing. Likewise, it is an amusement engaged for fun

that is non-utilitarian that the outcome is unpredictable and has an end


itself

Riot – denotes violence in sports. It is an increase of negative attitude in a

sport.

Set – refers to the partition of the match

Sportsmanship - an attitude that strives for a fair play, courtesy towards

teammates and opponents, ethical behavior and integrity, and grace in

victory and defeat

Team Captain – the leader or the player that is in charge of his/her

co-members

Uniform – the term for the clothing of the player that includes the shoes

and other accessories .

Trainer – the instructor that teaches drills and skills
