SYNOPSIS OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT WITHIN SUPPLY CHAIN

MANAGEMENT
The current research paper given by Elizabeth A Williamson, David K Harrison, Mike Jordan states
the development and role of Interorganisational Information Systems within supply chain
management. Interorganizational systems (IOS) are essential for simplifying the integration and
creation of distinctive supply chain operations. Organisations have tried to check and improve their
business by constantly assessing their internal business operations but what they don’t understand
is that they not only have to reassess their internal business operations but also their external
business operations. They usually involve techniques such as Manufacturing Resource Planning
(MRPII) and Just-In-Time (JIT). In order to meet the requirement of today’s world the companies
need to fully satisfy customer demands as well as trying to anticipate future demands. One more
technique was in use that was known as Supply chain management (SCM) which provided chances
for reducing the costs and improving the customer service.

The purpose of supply chain integration is to establish effective and efficient flows of products and
services, information, money, and choices in order to maximize customer value.

1. The usage of the Internet has also demonstrated to businesses that sharing information in
the supply chain benefits all participants, both upstream and downstream. One of the most
common applications of the Internet in SCM is distribution, which is a costly service for
businesses. Buyers and suppliers have more access to their partners' systems and can view
operational data. Smaller participants in a supply chain can now ‘shop around' for better
pricing and service. ATP systems, which let suppliers to access their partners' systems,
provide real-time integrated checks across the whole supply chain.
2. Overall, the Internet has had a substantial impact on consumer and supplier interactions
because it has made it simpler for people to access information about products and
providers, increased trust between customers and suppliers, and created new ways for
people to engage with one another.
3. The Customer Service improvements say that providing customers with the products,
services, and information they require is critical for businesses today. It is discovered that
Internet can be utilized to increase customer communications by receiving complaints,
emergency notifications, and 24-hour access to firm information. Overall, this has resulted
in faster reaction times to customer care issues and enhanced customer loyalty. Information
about customer preferences can be mined and used to inform future product development
and innovation. Furthermore, communications are multi-directional rather than sequential,
overcoming the Forrester 'bull-whip' effect.
Thus, This paper examined the evolution of interorganizational information systems within SCM and
their impact on supply chain effectiveness. Although IOS development has occurred throughout the
last 40 years, it has accelerated in recent years, resulting in a transition in the role of IT from a
competition weapon to a collaboration enabler. Because the Internet has increased
interorganizational information system capabilities, it is now being used as a standard platform for
information system development in supply chain management. The use of the Internet in
information flow in the supply chain can provide operational as well as strategic advantages, such as
product innovation through market research information.
