Spotlight Activity: Thankful for a Great Year!

I hope everyone had a great April Vacation! Mrs. Killam and I want to express
our heartfelt gratitude for entrusting us with your children. Thank you for being
so supportive. In the end, the incredible teamwork paid off and the kids have
had a great school year. I can say with confidence that our students will soon
be successful first graders! We will miss them! Please keep in touch so we can
celebrate all the student and family success. Happy Summer!

myView:
We have been working hard on generating and answering WH questions. They
have been working on writing questions and answers about animals too. We
continue to work on writing complete sentences with capital letters and
punctuation as well.

Fundations & Reading:

Children continue to practice decoding and fluency skills. In addition, we are
now combining comprehension and decoding skills. Once children are efficient
decoders, they can use some of their working memories to think about what
they are reading. Comprehension questions are asked of students after they
decode. Reading levels will be assessed and sent to next year’s teachers, with a
writing sample as well. I will continue to assess trick words every other week. End
of the year report card assessments will be completed by mid-June.

Math:
During Math, the students are working on how to “decompose” numbers, a
highlighted skill in the Common Core Math standards. Decomposition of
numbers is taking a number like 6 and breaking it down into 0+6. 1+5, 2+4, 3+3,
4+2, 5+1, and 6+0. We will practice decomposing numbers through 10 to help
children gain a good understanding of how numbers are related. We are also
working on our addition and subtraction facts through 20. Students should
continue practicing these facts throughout the summer. ST Math has proven to
be a huge success this year! We love JiJi!

Reminder:
As the weather finally gets warmer, please dress your child in layers. The
classroom can get warm during May and June. Please continue sending in a
water bottle with your child as well.

Home Extensions:
● Practice measuring distances to common places in your home. For
example, how many kid steps is it from the refrigerator to the sink? How
many adult steps? Why is it different?
● After reading with your child, ask them to retell the story. In addition, ask
them questions like: How do you think [main character] felt at the
beginning, middle, and end? What would happen if [change something in
the story]? What might happen next?
● Please remember to review trick words and have your child read daily.
