GOVERNMENT TERMS & CONCEPTS:

1. GOVERNMENT: A group of people with authority to control and direct the affairs of a country.

2. POLITICAL PARTY: an organization that coordinates people to capture political power through
an election.

3. CONSTITUENCY: an area that contains a body of voters who elect a representative to


parliament.

4. CANDIDATE: a person who is nominated for an election

5. ELECTORATE: all those persons eligible to vote in an election.

6. VOTERS’ LIST: a list of registered voters in a single or consolidated area or in an entire country.

7. FLOATING VOTER: those voters not aligned to a particular party. A person who does not vote
consistently for any single political party.

8. REPRESENTATIVE: a person chosen to act or make decisions on behalf of a group of people.

9. ADULT SUFFRAGE: the right to vote for all adult who are 18 years and older.

10. FRANCHISE: a right to vote at a public election.

11. MANIFESTO: a written statement declaring publicly the intentions, motives or views of the
issuer.

12. BALLOT: a slip or sheet of paper on which a person’s vote is marked.

13. HUNG PARLIAMENT: when no major political party has an absolute majority seats in a
parliament.

14. GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY: a broad coalition government consisting of all parties (or
all major parties)in the legislature, usually formed during a time of war or other national
emergency.
