Project Title

To investigate and to find out if students prefer typing than writing in a prominent
high school in Jamaica.
4

Introduction
The reason for carrying out this research is to have better problem solving skills
and have analytical thinking.
Typing is the skill of writing something by means of typewriter or computer.
Writing is the process of using symbols (letters of the alphabet, punctuation and
spaces) to communicate thoughts and ideas in a readable form.
This SBA is based on both writing and typing; we conducted a questionnaire to
find out whether students preferred “writing or typing,” this questionnaire was
carried out in a prominent high school in St. James, Jamaica.
The questionnaire was given to 30 students, 15 from the tenth grade and 15 from
the eleventh.
The aim of this project is to find out if students rather typing than writing.

Method of Data Collection

A prominent high school in St James, Jamaica has a population of approximately

thirteen hundred students. But only the grades 10-11 students were chosen for this
observation due to the fact that they would have to face these differences in their
weekly schedule. Samples were issued to thirty students to carry out this
investigation. The data was collected by the use of a questionnaire.

The method of data collection was judged based on the questions that are on the
questionnaire, due to the fact that the questions were structured to gather only the
information that was necessary for the investigation. In addition the questions were
clearly stated to prevent any confusion so that they could easily be answered.

The questionnaire was given to the students one afternoon after school to give their
responses. They complied and gave it back as they were finished, they did not
bring it home.

Analysis of data

The data collected shows that majority of the students preferred typing than
writing. The least preferred was writing. Overall out of the thirty students who
were questioned 80% of girls chose typing and 20% chose writing. 67% Boys
chose typing and 33% chose writing.
The pattern seen in this data is that both genders gradually chose typing than
writing. However the percentage of girls choosing typing were more compared to
the male’s whereas the percentage of girls were a lot lower choosing writing and
the percentage were higher in the data collected from the males.
9

Discussion of Findings

This research indicated that typing is preferred highly by both genders. Typing is
considered to be a lot easier than writing as writing often takes a lot of time and
tends to tire one out in contrast to typing which is fairly quick and easy and takes
up less energy.
In addition, to this data indicated that typing ought to be widely used in schools as
it’s easier for students and it also helps to correct, incorrect sentences and is a lot
faster on calculations. Furthermore if typing is practiced in school it is considered
to be helping students prosper in the future.
10

Conclusion

In conclusion the research and questionnaire shows that typing is preferred over
writing. And from the investigation conducted 67% of boys chose typing and 33%
boys chose writing, concluding to this boys prefer typing and girls also prefer
typing as 80% chose typing and 20% chose writing. Therefore, our overall research
shows that both genders not only prefer typing over writing because it’s easy,
quicker and takes less energy but also because its time saving.

Overall Presentation

Throughout this School Based Assessment, the researchers sat down and agreed on
a specific topic. The researchers then acceded to a conclusion on how the
information will be sustained. We then wrote a questionnaire, for data collection
and passed them out to 30 students (15) boys and (15) girls. Afterwards the
researchers collected them back and analyzed their responses and put them in
graph format. Thereinafter the researchers interpreted the information and did the
analysis of data, the discussion of findings and conclusion.
