Abstract

The utilization of artificial impedance surfaces (AIS) has emerged as a powerful

technique in controlling electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering. This paper

provides an overview of the principles and applications of AIS in the domain of applied

electromagnetics, focusing on their role in scattering control. AIS, characterized by

engineered surface impedance profiles, offer unprecedented control over electromagnetic

wave behavior, enabling functionalities such as reflectionless absorbers, directive

scattering, and cloaking. The theoretical foundation of AIS design, including impedance

boundary conditions and metasurface engineering, is discussed, along with practical

implementation strategies using metamaterials and metasurfaces. Furthermore, the paper

reviews recent advancements in scattering control techniques leveraging AIS,

encompassing radar cross-section reduction, stealth technology, and antenna design. Case

studies highlight the efficacy of AIS in diverse applications, ranging from stealth aircraft

to wireless communication systems. Finally, challenges and future directions in the

development and deployment of AIS for enhanced electromagnetic functionality are

outlined, underscoring the potential for groundbreaking advancements in areas such as

aerospace engineering, telecommunications, and beyond.
