Tuck Everlasting
Reader Response Questions
Prologue- Chapter 4
Directions: Answer the following questions using your own words, in complete sentences, using
information from the text.

1. List the three things that happened in the prologue that appeared to have no
connection.

2. What is the setting of the story? Use examples from the text to support your answer.

3. Based on the author’s description, explain why the Foster’s house does not seem to be
very inviting.

4. How were the cows responsible for the wood being left alone?

5. Describe the relationship between Mae and Angus Tuck.

Mae and Angus are a husband and wife who have clearly been married for a very long time.
They know each other so well that Tuck knows Mae is putting on a shawl without even looking
at her.
Overall, it is a comfortable and loving relationship in which they can “tolerate” each other’s
differences (“Mae... looked at him tolerantly.”) and disagree with each other in a calm way.

6. Does Angus Tuck seem enthusiastic about the opportunity to see his sons? Why or why
not?
No, when Mae tells him that she is meeting the boys, he responds by going back to sleep.

7. How could Mae, Angus Tuck, and their sons all look the same for 87 years?

We don’t have any direct information, but the title of the book gives us a hint. They are
“everlasting,” which means that they cannot die.

8. Do you think that Winnie Foster likes being an only child? Why or why not?

No, she says to the toad that she wants a sister or a brother because that would mean her
parents and grandmother would pay attention to someone else. She doesn’t like all their
attention.

9. Why is Winnie so frustrated? How might you feel if you were in her family situation?

Winnie is frustrated because she cannot have adventures and do something interesting that
would make a difference in the world. She feels like an animal in a cage.

10. Why does a stranger in yellow stop to speak with Winnie?

11. What do the Fosters hear as they are talking? Do you believe Winnie’s grandmother is
correct?
