Compound sentences:

Two independent clauses joined with a coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
(fanboys)

I am taking 15 units this quarter, and I am working full time.

She is busy with her life, yet she always finds time to help others.

I have two papers to write this weekend, so I can’t go out with you.

He is tired, for he stayed up very late last night.

She needs to finish her project, but she feels really sick.

I’m going to go out to shop for his birthday, or I’ll shop at home on the Internet.

***He doesn’t like ice cream, nor does he like cake.


(He doesn’t like ice cream, and he doesn’t like cake.)

She is studying English and biology. Is this a compound sentence?


Why not? There is only one sentence. There is only one subject and one verb.

Coordinating conjunctions:
● Use to show a relationship between ideas in two independent clauses
(An independent clause has a subject and a verb and it is a complete idea.)
● Use a coordinating conjunction to join two independent clauses to make a compound
sentence.
● Use a comma before the coordinating conjunction in a compound sentence.
And: addition ( you are giving more information)
But/yet: opposition/ contrast
For: cause
So: result or effect
Or: choice, option, alternative

Practice: Write some compound sentences using different coordinating conjunctions.


(Make sure that you have two independent clauses.)

Use: and, but, for, yet, so

Topic: What did you do last weekend?

For example:

I didn’t have any food at home, so I had to go to the grocery store.


I wanted to go to the beach, but it was too windy on Sunday.

And:
I went to the mall, and I met my friend there.
I called my mother, and I talked with her about something.
I did my homework, and I walked my dog.
Last week, I went to San Francisco on business, and I also managed to visit Pier 39 for a
walk.
The weather was good, and I went for a walk.
I went to the gym last weekend, and I did weight lifting.
I finished my homework, and I washed the whole family’s clothes.

But:
I wanted to go to church last Sunday, but I had to go to work.
I didn’t have work on Monday, but I had to go to the gym and class.
My friend called me to go shopping, but I was at work.
I decided to drive to the shoe store, but I changed my mind some later.

I had a plan to meet my friend, but she was sick, so I stayed home.
I wanted to get up late on the weekend, but my son had the flute class in the morning.

So:
They called me from work, so I needed to go to work on Sunday.
I studied English, so I did well on my test on Monday.
I was supposed to visit my friend,so I drove to his home.
I had a writing assignment, so I had to start writing it.
My brother was sick on Saturday, so I made him soup.

For:
I didn’t go out, for my son had a headache last weekend.
I did not go to the gym, for I was tired.
