DETERMINING TEXTUAL EVIDENCE

LET US KNOW

Critical reading involves evaluating an author’s work or argument. By


saying so, we determine and refer some evidence from the text that the author
wrote. Using text evidence can include how an argument can be supported by
choosing concepts related to our claims.

LET US STUDY

Determining textual evidence can also mean recognizing your


proving point in the author’s argument. Once you have determined
the argument, begin looking for evidence: (a) search for an excerpt
from the text that supports your idea; (b) evaluate if it will come off
as an important evidence; and (c) cite that textual piece. Evidence
may include facts and statistics (objectively validated information on
your subject); opinion from experts (leading authorities on a topic);
and personal anecdotes (Fuentes, 2019).

Fuentes (2019) suggests the following characteristics and


questions to determine good evidence from the text:

1. unified;
2. relevant to the central point;
3. specific and concrete;
4. accurate; and
5. representative or typical

• What questions can you ask about the claims?


• Which details in the text answer your questions?
• What are the most important details in the paragraph?
• What is each one’s relationship to the claim?
• How does the given detail reinforce the claim?
• What details do you find interesting? Why?
• What are some claims that do not seem to have support?
What kinds of support could they be provided with?

• What are some details that you find questionable? Why do
you think so?
• Are some details outdated, inaccurate, exaggerated, or
taken out of context?
• Are the sources reliable?

When analyzing a response with a textual evidence, you may:

a. introduce the evidence;


b. include the excerpt from the text using quotation marks; and
c. relate your writing to the quotation and your claim.

LET US PRACTICE

Where in the poem can we see words that suggest the feelings of
love? Explain your argument and cite lines from the poem.

I don’t love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz,


or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as one loves certain obscure things,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that doesn’t bloom but carries

EVALUATION

Refer to the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln and answer the


following questions.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this
continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation,
or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are
met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a
portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave
their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper
that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate --


we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who
struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add
or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say
here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living,
rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who
fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be
here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from
these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for
which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here
highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this
nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that
government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not
perish from the earth.
