PART A
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15 marks. Marks
1 a) How will you find out the Exit age distribution in Tank in series model? (9)
b) The concentration reading in the table below represents a continuous response to (6)
a pulse input into a closed vessel which is to be used as a chemical reactor.
Calculate the mean residence time of fluid in the vessel, tabulate and plot the exit
age distribution.

2 a) Calculate the mean conversion in the reactor characterized by the RTD obtained (10)
from a pulse input at 320 K for a first order liquid phase irreversible reaction,

b) Explain the significance of Dispersion number and degree of segregation. (5)
3 a) Write notes on Residence time distribution function E. (5)

c) What are the desirable properties of a tracer used in RTD studies? (4)
PART B
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15 marks.
4 a) Explain ( i) tortuosity (ii) constriction factor and (iii) effective diffusivity. (6)
b) Derive the expressions for thiele modulus for diffusion and reaction in spherical (9)
catalyst pellets.
5 a) For the reaction A+B ↔ C, the mechanism is reaction between adsorbed A and (9)
B in gas phase. Develop the rate equation if the controlling step is surface
reaction.

b) Explain Weisz–Prater criterion for internal diffusion and Mears criterion for (6)
external diffusion.
6 a) Explain any four types of catalysts with suitable examples. (6)
b) The mechanism of decomposition of Cumene on the catalyst surface is given by (9)

Answer any two full questions, each carries20 marks.
7 a) Explain progressive conversion model with the help of neat figure. (4)
b) An irreversible first order isomerisation reaction A→ R is carried out in liquid (12)
phase in a MFR. Rate constant k at 1650C is 0.7 hr -1
. Activation energy is
12000J/mol. Heat of reaction is -350KJ/kg. Specific heats of reactants and
products are 1.95 KJ/kg K. Volumetric flow rate is 0.33 m3/hr. Feed temperature
is 20oC and conversion expected is 95%. Calculate the reactor size and
temperature of the reaction mixture if the reactor is operated adiabatically.
c) Define equilibrium conversion and adiabatic equilibrium conversion. (4)
8 a) Derive the expression for conversion for a non isothermal adiabatic reaction (8)
starting from the energy balance equation.
b) Derive the relationship between time and conversion for solid fluid non catalytic (12)
reaction (without change in particle size) in which gas film diffusion controls the
rate.
9 a) Calculate the time required for complete burning of graphite (Size R0 =5mm, (8)
density =2.28g/cc) in an 8% oxygen stream at 900 0C and 1 atm. For high gas
velocity. For high gas velocity assume that film diffusion does not offer any
resistance to transfer and reaction. Rate constant k˝=20 cm/s.
b) Explain shrinking core model for particles of changing size. Derive the (12)
relationship between time, shrinking particle size and conversion for reaction in
which ash layer diffusion controls the rate
