Who is an assistant surgeon?

An assistant surgeon is a medical professional who works alongside the primary surgeon during
surgical procedures. This role is typically fulfilled by individuals who have completed medical
school and are in various stages of their training or career, such as:

 Surgical Residents:

These are physicians who are undergoing specialized training in surgery. They may serve as
assistant surgeons as part of their residency programs to gain hands-on experience and develop
their surgical skills under the guidance of attending surgeons.

 Fellows:

Fellows are physicians who have completed their residency training and are pursuing additional
specialized training in a specific surgical subspecialty. They may also assist as surgeons in
procedures related to their area of specialization.

 Physician Assistants (PAs) and Surgical Assistants:

PAs and surgical assistants are healthcare professionals who are trained to perform various tasks
in surgical settings, including assisting surgeons during procedures. They work under the
supervision of licensed physicians and may function as assistant surgeons in many surgical cases.

 Surgical Technologists:

Surgical technologists are trained to assist surgeons during operations by preparing the operating
room, arranging equipment, and handing instruments to the surgeon during procedures. While
they do not typically perform surgical tasks independently, they play a vital role in supporting
the surgical team.

Work of an assistant surgeon

The work of an assistant surgeon varies depending on the specific setting and the surgeon they
are assisting. However, typical duties may include:

other members of the surgical team.
