AP World Summer Assignment

Purpose: To review Global 9 content that you learned from region to region, and apply it chronologically to the
first four eras of the AP World History curriculum.

Four Parts of the Assignment:


1. Era One: Technological & Environmental Transformations (Origins of Civilization to 600 BCE)
a. Complete the map project*
2. Era Two: Organization/Reorganization of Human Societies (600 BCE to 600 CE)
a. Read the excerpt “Why Do Some Societies Make Disastrous Decisions?” (pages 419-440) from
Jared Diamond’s Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed
b. Respond to this prompt: Apply Jared Diamond’s collapse theory to ONE empire from “Era
Two”, explaining two different S.P.I.C.E. thematic reasons for that empire’s collapse. Your
choices of empires are: Rome, Persia, Han, Maya or Gupta. This 2 page, double-spaced, typed
response will be graded using the following rubric. It should contain an introduction with a
thesis, likely two body paragraphs (one for each S.P.I.C.E. theme) and a conclusion that makes a
current day connection.*

3. Era Three: Regional/Interregional Interactions (600 CE – 1450 CE)

4. Era Four: Global Interactions (1450 CE – 1750 CE)

Please do not staple the assignments together as each component will be collected individually.
