AM TRANSMITTER
VOLTAGE CONTROL OSCILLATOR

I. OBJECTIVES
After completing this experiment, you should be:
- Understand the working principle of voltage control oscillator.
- Measure the frequency and waveform of the VCO.

II. BASIC CONCEPT

- An oscillator is an electronic circuit for generating an AC signal voltage. The frequency of
the generated signal depends on the L-C circuit.
- The Voltage Control Oscillator made of a varactor diode, where the capacitance of diode
varies with the amount of the applied voltage.

III. EQUIPMENT
1. Radio Communication Trainer Base station ERT-RCT-1
2. AM Transmitter Module ERT-RCT-5
3. Oscilloscope
4. Digital Frequency Counter

IV. DISCUSSION
An oscillation is a back and forth motion. In a parallel LC circuit, electrons oscillate when
the circuit is excited. See the figure 4.2-1. When S1 is closed, capacitor C will charge to the
battery voltage. If S1 is then opened and S2 closed, C will discharge through L, creating an
expanding magnetic field about L. After C has discharged, the magnetic field again appears
around L, but this time it is in the opposite direction. This process continues back and forth,
causing electrons to oscillate in the tuned circuit, also called tank circuit. However, owing to
the resistance in the circuit the amplitude of oscillation is damped, as in Figure 4.2-1,
although the period of every cycle is the same. The frequency of oscillation is:

Examine the VCO circuit shown in Figure 4.2-2, which is part of AM transmitter module ERT-
RCT-5. The potentiometer VR1 is used to adjust the voltage that applied to varactor diode
D1& D2. It varies the output frequency of oscillator. The variable capacitor VC1 and inductor
L1 can be adjusted to obtain desired output.

V. PROCEDURE
1. Put the AM Transmitter ERT-RCT-5 onto the base station and connect the ribbon cable to
link them.
2. Make jumper connection for MW channel on point J1 to J1a and J2 to J2a.
3. Switch on the AC power on the left side of base station. Connect oscilloscope probe and
frequency counter to TP1. Observe and record the wave form and frequency oscillation.

Amplitude : _________ Vpp

Frequency : _________ Hz
4. Change jumper connection for SW1 channel (J1 to J1b and J2 to J2b).
5. Connect oscilloscope probe and frequency meter to TP2. Observe and record the signal
waveform and frequency oscillation.
6. Repeat step 3 for SW1 measurement.
Amplitude : _________ Vpp

Frequency : _________ Hz
7. Change jumper connection for SW2 (J1 to J1c and J2 to J2c).
8. Switch on the power switch, connect oscilloscope probe and frequency meter to TP3.
Observe and record the signal waveform and frequency oscillation.
9. Repeat step 3 for SW2 measurement.

Amplitude : _________ Vpp

Frequency : _________ Hz
Note: For your reference, the oscillators have been set as follow.

MW : 1.7 MHz approximately
SW1 : 2.4 MHz approximately
SW2 : 5.6 MHz approximately
You only permitted to adjust the VC for fine tuning purpose. You may change the
frequency by turning the coil slug, and please return to its preset frequency back, because
it is used for next experiments.
10. Consult your experiment result to your instructor.
