What’s In?
Let’s help the rabbit to get its food, by drawing the path through this
maze. You must have to identify the equation and inequality in one variable
because this will be your guide to help the rabbit.

What’s New
Here are some situations where we can still deal with equations and
inequalities in one variable. Answering this can relate to our
lesson.
Let’s have this situation.
1) Your friend’s family will migrate to another country. They have many
puppies because it was their business. Your friend calls you and tells you that she
will be giving you puppies and she says that she will be giving you at least 10
puppies. How many puppies would you expect to have when she says, that she will
give you at least 10 puppies?
➢ In this situation, say that your friend will be giving you at least 5 puppies.
Writing Mathematically x > 5, x represents the puppies she will be giving you. So
therefore, you are expecting to receive greater than five which could be 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
and so on.
2) Your sister won in lotto and wants to share it to her family. She decided to
give her siblings ₱ 50,000 each. How much money will you receive?
➢ In this situation, it is clear that each will be receiving ₱ 50,000. Writing
Mathematically x = 50,000, which x represents her siblings. So, therefore, you will be
receiving ₱ 50,000.
5
What Is It?
This time we are going to find the solution of a linear equation or inequality in
one variable. We take them one at a time and we will start on the solution of a linear
equation in one variable. The solution is the number that will satisfy or make the
equation true.
Illustrative Examples:
1) x – 8 = 4
x – 8 + 8 = 4 + 8 → addition property of equality
x = 12
Let’s have the shortcut
x – 8 = 4 be sure to change the sign
x=4+8
x = 12
2) x + 5 = 11
x + 5 – 5 = 11 – 5 → subtraction property of equality
x = 6 → the solution is 6
Let’s have the shortcut
x + 5 = 11 be sure to change the sign
x = 11 – 5
x=6
𝑥
3) =3
9
𝑥
9• = 3 • 9 → multiply both sides of the equation by 9 to eliminate
9
the denominator of x
9𝑥
= 27
9
x = 27→ the solution is 27
Let’s have the shortcut
𝑥
=3
9
x=3•9
x = 27
6
4) 4x = ‒ 88
4𝑥 − 88
= → both the equation is divided by the numerical
4 4
coefficient of x to change the coefficient of x to 1
x = ‒ 22 → is the solution
5) 3x + 4 = 16
3x = 16 – 4
3x = 12
3𝑥 12
=
3 3
x = 4 → is the solution
6) 5x – 8 = 10 + 3x
5x – 3x = 10 + 8
2x = 18
2𝑥 18
=
2 2
x = 9 → is the solution
That is the solution to the equation. Let’s have also solutions for inequality in
one variable. The set of numbers that satisfies inequality is the solution.
Illustrative Examples:
1) x – 5 > 9
x–5+5>9+5
x > 14 → the value of x is greater than 14, therefore the solutions
are 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and so on.
2) x + 7 < ‒ 3
x<‒3‒7
x < ‒ 10 → the value of x is less than ‒ 10, therefore the
solutions are ‒11, ‒12, ‒13, ‒14………
7
𝑥
3) ≥3
9
𝑥
9• ≥3•9
9
9𝑥
≥ 27
9
x ≥ 27 → the value of x is greater or equal to 27, therefore, we
include 27 to our solutions so we have the solutions
27, 28, 29, 30, 31, and so on.
4) 5x ≤ 35
5𝑥 35
≤
5 5
x ≤ 7 → the value of x is less than or equal to 7, therefore, we
include 7 to our solutions so we have the solutions 7, 6, 5, 4,
3, 2, and so on.
TAKE NOTE: When multiplying/dividing an inequality by negative numbers, the sign
of inequality ( > 𝒐𝒓 < ) is reversed.
Example:
‒ 3x > 18
‒3𝑥 18
>
‒3 ‒3
x > ‒ 6 → reverse the sign
x < ‒ 6 → the solutions are less than ‒6, therefore we have ‒7, ‒8,
‒9, ‒10, and so on.
Let’s check:
* if we will not change the sign, the solutions are ‒5, ‒4, ‒3, and so on.
If we substitute ‒ 5 to the equation we have,
‒3x > 18
‒3 ( ‒5 ) > 18
15 > 18 is false
* if we will change the sign, the solutions are ‒7, ‒ 8, ‒ 9, and so on.
If we substitute ‒7 to the equation we have,
‒3x > 18
‒3 ( ‒7 ) > 18
21 > 18 is true
So again, don’t forget to reverse the sign of inequality when you are
multiplying or dividing inequality by negative numbers.
