Compressor valves why so many plates????
Told him that better surface area and better vibration dampening, didn’t look satisfied

Boiler blow down full procedure???

Will open sea side valves, then first will do scum blow down, for this firstly we will open
the boiler side valve completely and open and close the adjacent valve so that the pipe
gets warmed up and no thermal stresses on pipe, then we will first close the adjacent
valve(the one which we throttle) and the boiler side valve (the one that was full open)
same procedure for bottom blowdown, about timing I told I will follow the makers
instruction that for how much time each blow down has to be done and also about the
frequency of blowdown would depend on manufacturer recommendations and boiler
water test results.

Why 2 valves at sea side???

If only one valve and that starts leaking then sea water will enter in pipe causing corrosion
problems, pin hole and cracking of pipe.
OMD alarm actions???

Check if alarm true from ECR there will be an OMD alarm which will indicate that it wasn’t
a sensor failure, if not this then check locally the temperature of that unit and adjacent
unit crankcase, if confirmed yes then inform CE, inform bridge and ask to stop the engine
asap, then in mean time keep a fire hose and extinguisher standby, don’t stop any lube oil
pump and leave the ER for 45-60 mins and come back, check the temperature of the
crankcase and confirm all units okay, engage turning gear, open crankcase doors and
inspect what caused the omd alarm to trigger…
Sparks in funnel actions???Why cannot do soot blow???
I told him that I’ll check the EGE outlet temperature and compare with previous ones, If
temperature increasing rapidly it means that it’s an indication pf fire, then I told I’ll inform
CE, Tell bridge to stop the engine, will monitor the temperature of EGe locally also by
temperature gun, fire hose and extinguisher all rigged up, once engine stop not to stop
circulating pump, also 1 person to check the cascade tank level , if dropping it means then
tubes are leaking and then only we will stop circulating pump to avoid hydrogen fire and
further metal fire, also we’ll start boundary cooling in mean time and corresponding
temperature to check, once all okay open up EGE and inspection to be done check for any
damage or deformation of tubes caused because of fire.
Then he asked me that only fire can be reason for sparks nothing else? I told him if we had
done EGE washing in previous ports then sparks can come as the soot would be wet, also
about soot blow must not be done as in case of fire it can escalate the chances of fire as
we’re giving air, he then asked me do we do soot blow by air? I told in my ship we’d
sootblow donw by compressed air only unlike in other ships where steam is used, he said
ok good
Fuel pump lead and significance???

Fuel pump lead is the distance by which the fuel pump’s plunger is above the top surface
of spill port for that particular unit when at TDC, Lead tells us about the BOI, More lead
means Early BOI and vice versa…
VIT and significance???
I told abbreviated as Variable Injection Timing, and It’s the advance in the timing of fuel to
achieve the Pmax of 100% at 85% itsef, about Significance I told him that we’ll achieve
better power output with comparatively less fuel consumption and it’ll also reduce SFOC
Boiler burner routines???
If after overhauling pilot burner not firing reasons???

I told him I’d rotary cup burner!!!

Then told that on boiler control panel and in ECR I’ll post suitable plards for men at work.
Burner door wil have a hinge I’ll open that and rack out the burner!!!
Then check for the nozzle conditions, crabon accumulation, cup wobble, check for fuel
inside furnace if dripped!! Then I told will clean all this carbon and all, will also asses the
condition of how much carbon was accumulated last time and compared this time, then
once all done box back, close hinge and try out boiler and keep standby
For pilot burner I told him that I’ll check the terminals if connected properly, then check
diesel oil temp and pr, check if solenoid valve operating, check if water in oil, if all ok still
problem then I’ll remove pilot burner and check the electrode distance and also if carbon
deposits are there that I might have forgot to clean will clean them

Stop lube oil pump, engage turning gear, wait for temperature to come to normal,
isolation related and safety aspects I told him, then turn the engine to BDC of that unit
and insert feeler gauge between bottom half of shell and crank pin, also Taken at fwd and
aft of bearing and at sides also. Not taken at top half as it’s loaded
Where you’ll take clearance? At what point and how? Why not at top half????
Heat treatment done for gudgeon pin??

How hardnening is done and it’s procedures???
I told regarding surface hardening but he told those are types tell me how you’ll do? How
many types and procedures?? I said sorry sir

Difference between ME and AE lube oil?? Why TBN?? Why we use AE oil with that
particular TBN?? Why not for ME?? Etc etc

Told him about values, also told him that in AE same oil is used for liner lubrication but in
ME we have cylinder oil , so no need of high TBN of in crankcase and if we use then it
might cause calcium carbonate film between bearing and journal and also it’d be costly
affair to have such high volume of oil
Purpose of stuffing box?? Why?? What it selas?? What if it wasn’t there???

Cylinder oil getting scrapped off will enter crankcase there by contamining the crankcase
oil.
Also scavenge air will leak into crankcase causing crankcase to pressurize and we’ll also
loose air so it’ll affect the combustion and power output of the engine

Your 2/E told you to that tomorrow we’ll do unit decarb, what all preparation you’ll do in
your night watch???
I told him everything in detail like we’ll keep the spare piston ready, checks made on spare
piston like crown burnaway measurement, grooves width, presure testing to be done etc,
I told him that I’ll keep all spanners, hammer, buffing machine, buffing wheel, pneumatic
hoses, hydraulic jacks for cylinder head and their lifting tool, piston lifting tool, liner
ovality check template this all I’ll get on cylinder head platform and keep standby, also I
told him that I’ll check that the hydraulic pump has oil in it or not, also I’ll get some oil
standby and keep, then cylinder head studs have cap over them, I told I’ll open those caps
clean all the threads with wire brush and diesel and spray some WD 40 and leave so that
the threads don’t jamm up the next day while opening the hydraulic nuts, then I told I’ll
also keep the palm bolt jacks and distance piece standby at bottom platform, I’ll keep the
support stanchion or plates standby at the unit to do decarb, most importantly I told him
I’ll also inspect the shackle, slings if used any and belts it must be in good condition and as
per the SWL, at last I said also I’ll cross check with my seniors regarding the Immobilzation
and time period for the same!!!!
